Please explain how to: lite a coleman kerosene lantern

this is a video on how to light a coleman kerosene lantern basically you're going to need three things your alcohol bottle filled with denatured alcohol or 91 isopropyl alcohol you can also use methanol commonly found in the heat engine additives you can find it at walmart other automotive stores use the yellow not the red the red use produces a lot of soot it can be done in a pinch but i wouldn't recommend it your best bet denatured alcohol works great some matches are a long stick lighter and of course your lantern filled with kerosene and this one's already pumped up all you need to do is take your alcohol bottle feed it up through the hole fill your preheater cup okay you can see the preheater cups filled up now if it's really warm um i'd say above 80 degrees you only need to fill that thing about half full but just for video purposes today i filled it all the way to the top now take your match stick it up through the touch hole and light and sometimes these alcohol flames can be hard to see but it is going and eventually the alcohol start to bubble that's what you're looking for okay now i'm just going to let this burn until it's almost ready to go out can also take this time to pressurize your lantern pump it up and kerosene takes a lot of pressure pump it your normal lantern you'd pump 30 maybe 40 times i would give this probably 30 pumps and then once it's going an additional 20. now what you're seeing there is a little flare that's from residual kerosene the generator being vaporized that's completely and totally normal you can see the denatured alcohol burns nice and clean there's no soot no smoke coming out of the top that's what you like to see take a second here while the preheater cup is burning to talk about kerosene lanterns versus regular coleman white gas or even the dual fuel unleaded the problem with the dual fuel is it runs off normal coleman white gas or gasoline but the problem is the generator will clog up eventually even using good quality gas normal unleaded so i even don't recommend it in the dual fuels kerosene just costs so much less i can pick up five gallons of kerosene at my local certified for twenty dollars pick up a gallon of coal and fuel walmart it's ten just one gallon cost me fifty bucks five gallons all right see the pre-heater cup it's about empty i'll go ahead and crank this on it's kind kinda warm today open your valve all the way there she goes nice and bright i'm falling in love with kerosene the 639c lantern it's rated at 500 candle power that's great and shutting them off that's simple too crank your vowel all the way over and they go right out that's what i like about these kerosenes they kick right off or kerosene is much more stable than nafta coal and white gas it's more stable less volatile i should say not stable they're both stable you can actually vent the cap now i just filled this one so it's really full i don't want it spurting out at me but you can vent the cap on these to get them to shut off what i mean by vent the cap is i'll show you on this here over here you can just open up the cap and bleed off your extra bleed off any extra pressure that one's really full too but that's about it just one extra step than a normal normal weight gas but i think it's worth it alright have a good day
