Please explain how to: herringbone / catch stitch (tailoring / hemming) (blind hem by hand)

hello and welcome to our short sewing tutorial where I'm going to be sharing with you how to sew a herringbone catch stitch now this stitch is often referred to as a herringbone stitch sometimes as a catch stitch and it looks as you can see here like a little bit of a zigzag or X's that are crossing now I'm going to be sharing with you how to sew it flat like you can see here and also how to sew it like you would as a blind hemming stitch so if you collect that a needle and some thread I will show you how to do this I'm going to start by showing you how to complete the herringbone patch stitch as if you were using it for hemming I generally like to do this so that you can't visibly see it from the hem side of the fabric and you can see I've pressed up whatever my hand would be here and pop some pins in I tend to place my pins in about half an inch one point two centimeters ish from the raw edge of the fabric and the thing to note here is that you would have had to finish the raw edge of the fabric either using an overlocker or by zigzagging or over casting the edge of the fabric in whatever way that you plan to finish the edge of it to prevent any fraying then I'm going to actually fold this back over the pin and the pin sort of amusing as a bit of an anchor for me to hold it there you could if you prefer however actually pin on top with the little fold back like so so I've tried a knot at the end of my thread and I've popped that through the fabric and I've sewn over myself on my hem allowance now to complete the herringbone catch stitch you're going to move forward but this stitch is actually going to be completed to the right so we're moving to the right by about a quarter of an inch five millimeters and we're going in to our back of our main fabric here and we're just going to take a very small little nick out of that fabric you ideally don't want this stitch come through to the right side of your project and we'll pull that through we're then going to go back on to our folded fabric which is the hem allowance and take a little nick again this can be a little bit more than a nick on this side because this is the inside of the garment so you don't have to worry about it as much as the other and then we're going to move again up onto the back of your exterior fabric take a smaller than neck and then back down again and you'll see very closely that the stitches are actually sort of crisscross in each other and the key is to just try and be consistent with the lengths of the stitches and you want to keep doing this and it should look like a little bit of a criss-cross effect now in terms of how long you want your stitches to be you can change that and it depends on what you're working on and I refer fold this layer of fabric up you can see that perhaps you can see a few of the little red Nick's on this side but you should hardly be able to see anything on the other side because I've been really careful that I was only catching a very small amount of the main fabric as I was doing that now the other option for a herringbone cap stitch is when it's completed flat this can be done on the inside of the garment it's often done on seam allowances to attach them to perhaps a lining it's used a lot in tailoring to perhaps attach your inter linings in position and it's exactly the same stitch but we're just going to complete it flat rather than folding back the edge of the hem allowance like we were previously doing so we're going to be picking up now we're starting at the bottom edge on the hem allowance here we're going up onto the main fabric and perhaps it you know how much you're picking up will depend on what you're working on whether it will be seen whether it won't be seen and we're moving to the right we're going down picking up a small amount we're going up picking up a small amount again the size of the stitch will depends on what you are doing down picking up a small amount I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial thanks for watching
