today in boot day we're going to do a side-by-side comparison I can truly understand what is the difference between boot cream and leather a pair of boots so over the course of the last year I've received a bunch of emails asking me what's the difference in all the boot care products out there and the two to keep coming up are the two that come in the Red Wing gift set this boot cream and this all-natural leather conditioner now guys are looking to clean their handmade heritage type boots and they don't want to hurt them they don't want to destroy the leather or do something that's going to cause premature wear or deterioration it's understandable your boots are an investment they're part of you they get you from point A to B they are part of the journey of life I understand all that so what is the difference between these two well the only way to really show you the difference because there is really no chemical difference there is nothing that's going to hurt your boots in either one of these products so when I first thought I should start this demonstration I thought you know what I'm going to use my 8:1 4:45 18s I'm going to show off the cleaning in the process on a pair of my thorough goods there's such a dark brown boot and I take such good care of them to begin with there's really nothing that needs to be cleaned I mean I could buff up the toes a little bit but the rest of the boot is so oiled and just so broken in and because I brush it and clean it you know periodically which for me is probably once every other week I take care of my own boots so not a good example then I started looking around the house and I thought well I'll do my little wife's Frye boots her Logan's she loves these boots she wears these every Saturday and Sunday whenever she goes out all dolled up and then I start looking at these way too dark and there's almost nothing that I can do to these also that's going to show up on camera then last night she walked in the door wearing her handmade Brazilian boots and I haven't touched these in over a year I haven't she hasn't asked me to clean them or buff them or oil them or do anything and since the last time I did that was the last time they were touched and they really need a desperate cleaning so I can't think of a better boot to use for this challenge or for this test then this pair of boots it shows where it shows deterioration the leather starting to dry it's not cracking nowhere but it is getting to that point where I would get a little worried about if I was going to bring these in to get these resold that the shoemaker or the cobbler would say to me can't be done alright so let's clear away a space here let's put the thurgood's on the floor let's take this beautiful pair of Frye boots and put them on the floor and now that leaves us with these two boots these two wonderful beat-up boots I mean she has done a great job of one breaking these boots in and two not taking care of them but I guess being the boot guy and living with the boot day that's kind of my job so everything that I'm going to use today for this demonstration exists in the Redwing boot care gift set the all-natural leather conditioner that is going to be done on this boot and we're going to move it aside we're going to put it aside boot cream is going to be used on this boot I'm going to use the horsehair brush and I'm going to use the rag that comes in the kit in order to apply the cream and the conditioner on both boots nothing more I'm not introducing no water here at all I'm not scrubbing anything for all intensive purposes these boots are actually pretty clean they're free of any real dirt or dust or anything like that I'm just going to give them a quick brushing which you should always do should always whenever you're going to start this stuff clean your booth brush the welt brush the toe get all your seams you're just looking to get any dirt out that's going to get round in as you start to rub the conditioners in okay so that one's done and as you can see and look at that that thing is just completely dry the leather is soft and supple it's not dried out it's just dry from not having anything added to it over the last year so we're going to start with the boot cream I'm going to open it up I'm going to take one section of the rag on the smooth side this cloth has two sides to it it has a rough kind of flat side and on the other side with the logo it's a smooth soft side so I'm going to work with the smooth soft side and one corner of this one put my hand back in there and get a little dab on here and I say a dab I actually mean a DAB now that might look like a lot to most you know as you can see but that's a dad to me and I'm going to start to rub it in now they say you should let this stuff dry over like an hour or so and they're probably right I mean I don't think it's a hundred percent necessary but why not right I mean they are your leather boots take care of them and apply some more because it is just soaking it up as you can see the leather is changing color already where the dryness is the book cream does not come out friendly is not a nice soft surface you need two hands always to work with it I'm going to work in the shaft section now I'm going to work on one side looking I mean I'm putting a lot in there you could see some of you guys might be having a conniption fit right now asking me my God why are you using so much what's wrong with you oh no oh no but these boots are dry and I know they say a little bit goes a long way and okay so it does go a long way but they need to be done so in sections like this where you see this detailed you know horse this bridle type leather work that's done in these boots I'm going to take the brush and I'm going to brush it out or in whatever however you want to say it I'm just going to brush it through there now I know it's on the brush not a big deal since I'm just going to be cleaning the boots with it as you can see as you can see that thing looks at least 50 percent better if not a hundred percent better but we're going to set it aside we're going to cap up the boot cream I'm going to lay out my rag so that's the side of the rag that I was using right there and I'm going to kind of brush off what's ever on the brush I'm going to try and get it off and just rub it into the rag on this section so nothing on there alright I'm going to fold the rag over here I'm going to use the same idea that I did before fold that up in there give myself a little something to hold on to and brush with like that nice little triangle now comes the leather conditioner now I don't know how different these are going to look once we're done here using these two different products but I can imagine just by looking at the leather conditioner and because of the ingredients that are in here that it's that pine pitch mink oil beeswax this does not contain silicone and our petroleum products I can just imagine because of the beeswax that this might get a little bit darker so I might be rebuffing this one to get it darker and smoother but at least we're going to get a really good idea on what both products do on something that is worn equally the same all right so since this stuff's got beeswax unlike the boot cream which is a cream it's a paste it's you know it's like mayonnaise inside a jar this has got beeswax so we're going to have to move this around and kind of get this to where it starts to look just like that until it comes off in this pasty type waxy look kind of like a melted candle you got to move it around like that and we're going to start right there so right where you can see the most where happening that's where we're going to start so I'm rubbing the stuff in now this goes on a lot better and a lot easier and like I said I was pretty sure this is going to happen it's just sucking it up and it is looking nice and greasy now for oil tan leathers this is what I personally prefer my leathers to look like almost like they're oily they're wet you know like like water is just going to roll off them and look how nice this stuff is across the sole section look there in the heel the way just kind of gives it that whole brand-new oily look so a nice amount there got a real nice amount again like a big goober of it on there going to bring it through the shaft on one side bring it through the shaft on the other side get this thing down on my arm I'm just going to start bringing it in and I'm just rubbing this in it it's not extremely hard but hard I'm not I'm not being gentle by any means when it comes to rubbing this I mean this is leather this is something that takes abrasion all day long so rub it hard did I just say rub it hard I just said rub it hard how else would you rub it if you were in rubbing if it wasn't hard come on guys that's it so side by side there is a considerable difference in look on how the materials absorb now I'm going to give these about 15 or 20 minutes to acclimate to the room and then I'm going to come back and I am going to buff them with the brush and just see how different they really do look after they've dried and cured all right so it was a little bit longer than 20 minutes I think I gave this just over an hour which is probably a good thing I've gave this an hour to acclimate to kind of suck into the leather now I'm going to buffing both with the buffing brush I'm going to start with the all natural leather conditioned boot which is this one here and this one here is the boot cream boot so let's see how it looks after a quick little buffing now it's moving the material around kind of restoring that used look and color to it you can see in the seams here right at the tops where the two pieces come together where I just didn't get a lot of the leather conditioner in there so the leather is a little bit lighter but at the same time everything looks really good the leather looks extremely soft and supple and you can just feel that there is a coat of wax on this leather now so rain-snow sweet a little kid vomiting on you whatever is going to kind of beat off this boot so let's see what the other one looks like I mean you can even tell the difference for this type of leather this all-natural leather conditioner will darken it will really change the color of the boot we're off this boot cream as as I'm buffing it color the boot is not changing it's just kind of staying right where it's at though it is still soft and waxy it didn't do a lot to darken the boot like it didn't put a coat into it to change the actual color of the boot now you might think that I'm feeling worried because now I have two different colored boots that she's going to kill me well I know that I'm going to reapply the all-natural leather conditioner to this one so they can both be a darker better looking leather in my opinion Red Wings all-natural leather conditioner buuut cream as you can see both products used on a boot that was kind of wearing out identically the tips were a little bit lighter the stitches were a little bit lighter the leather itself is showing a little wear in there you could see you cognitive old darkened and absorb the material differently you can clearly see a color difference and if you can't remember you can always swing by the boot DICOM I will have detailed photos of these where the lighting will be perfect so you can actually see what I'm seeing here if you should have any questions about either one of these products and about applying it to any boot
