hi everybody welcome to another yarn Scout Friday with me Laura and something a little bit different this week I'm going to be showing you how to make this loop stitch braid okay so the loop stitch braid effect that I've created here it's very similar to hairpin lace I don't know if you're aware of hairpin lace the difference being is that this is completely created with just using one crochet hook rather my crochet hook has gone here we go whereas normally in hairpin lace what you do is you have a piece of work and it's stretched between two pieces of like two rods as it were and which you sort of work down the middle and you end up with these two loops either side and but I was like well I don't have all that equipment I only have a hog cells like how can I create that same effect this lovely braid connection effect with just using a hook so I'm going to show you how to do this but you will have to get used to using a ballute stick and I'm afraid so I'll try and go as slowly as I can show you how to do it and hopefully you can follow along so for this pattern we're going to be using some DK like bolstered weight yard so y'all might just say but you can use any yarn that you like really with that I'm using AG four millimeter crochet hook and also good idea to have pair of scissors and a yarn a tapestry needle as well as I always say so let's begin okay so we're going to be creating these little strips which is similar to a hairpin lace as I said these little strips like this which should remind me about little millipedes or centipedes or something and I'm going to create loop stitch either side so the first thing we're going to do though is you need to work two units of for so plus one at the end so I'm going to chain 28 to get my units of four and I'm going to chain twin and extra ones so 29 in total just to get that extra stitch turning stitch at the end okay okay so do our little slip stitch and then we're going to chain 20 and 9 to 3 or five six 27 28 29 so I've chained 29 it's going to be my units of four let's get 28 plus one at the end so just slightly different to maybe how you normally going to work some half double crochets but if you can wait to unit 2 4 so that's either 4 8 12 16 check my four times table there 16 and then 9 20 24 28 32 36 40 stylus offal so went to the four times table and then just add one at the end once you've got your four times table number set out because then what we're going to do is we're going to yarn over I'm going to work some half double crochets so this patterns in u.s. terminology but a half double crochet in UK terminology is a half treble what we're going to do is we're going to put a hook into our second stitch from hook so we don't count the loop my hook there's our first one there's our second so in that 28 chain we're going to put a hook into there so normally if you work with half double crochets you wouldn't necessarily work into the second stitch in hook but we are for this pattern there's no rules in crazy just techniques so put your hook into there and then yarn over pull through all three to do a half double crochet we're going to do 1 half double crochet in each chain to the ends we end up with 28 so yarn over go into the next chain now it's very important when you're working to your change to just go into one bit of yarn as you can see I'm doing there this is so that we can see the chains still nice and clearly on the way back so we're going to work into them again on the other side so just go on to that one buddy yarn and do your half double crochet do one half double crochet in each chain along just going onto that one bit of yarn and so you get to the end and you have a stitch count of 20 feet so you can see just by working under that one buddy yarn keeps it nice and open so we can still see our chains one half double crochet each chain to the end he's just coming up to the end start doing my one half double crochets into that the last chain okay so you should have twenty eighth half double crochets like that or however many that you've worked your units are false same i-24 you might have thirty two sounds able so I've got twenty eighth what we're going to do now is I'm going to little chain one I'm not going to count that as a stitch there it's just a turning stitch then we're going to turn our work now we're going to work our loop stitches on this side so the first thing to do is to put your you're effectively doing single crochets but with a very elongated and loop so we're going to put our hook into our first stitch to begin go straight into there but then what we're going to do is that of just bringing the yarn through straight array just going to loop it around our hook so put your finger you can use a knitted big chunky knitting needles or a piece of tubing or something I prefer just to keep it simple and use my finger but what I'm going to do is I'm just gonna lay my finger underneath so I'm just going to rest that yarn on top and I'm going to just hold my work and then what I'm going to do is I'm going to bring this hook around my finger and I'm going to grab the yarn this side okay then I'm going to pull that I'm gonna pull that over and then if you put your finger over and down you'll keep the loop out of the way of your single crochets we're going to grab the yarn and behind very hard to do slowly we're going to bring that loop that we've wrapped through our stitch okay then we're going to let go of our loop we're going to move it back over to the other side and then we're going to grab the yarn again this side and pull through both loops do a little single crochet and that will secure your loop don't worry I'll show you again to put your hook into the next step and do the same thing again put your finger underneath the arm so underneath the yarn and then bring your hook over the top to the right okay it's a finger under the arm under the yarn put your hook to the right and underneath the fingers well we're going to grab that yarn from the back and basically wrap it around our finger like so I'm going to pull the loop down so it's out of the way while we grab this yarn from the back I'm going to bring that yarn through the stitch then we're going to move the loop over to the other side so it's out of the way again grab the yarn again and pull through both loops to secure okay it can be really really fiddly you can end up with different size loops as well so if it doesn't go too well to begin with you can always practice because it is fairly important to make sure that your loops are the same size so I'm actually going to do that one again because it's too big those will show you again how to do it so we go into the stitch we put our hook underneath our finger underneath the yarn so we're going to use our finger as theme of wrapping the yarn around bring your hook to the right and above the yarn okay see it's going above the yarn then grab the yarn from behind and wrap it around your finger pull the loop down with your finger so it's out the way then bring that loop through the stitch then pull the loop the other way grab the yarn pull through both loops okay so that time my loop looks a bit more of a similar size like to say don't have to be perfect sometimes they're roughly the same size so we go into the stitch put our finger under the arm and I'll hook above the yarn to the right now we're going to grab that yarn from there pull this loop down with your finger so it's out the way and bring that hooked yarn through the stitch then we move the loop over to the right so it's out of the way grab the yarn again pull through both loops okay and that secures it and obviously let your finger out as well and that secures it and keeps it in place it won't unravel you're creating this little single crochets so I'm going to do that all the way across we end up with 28 loops or however many loops so your units of four and so we've got yeah so we got 28 little loops so we get into the stitch put your finger on to the arm hook over the yarn to the right like that grab the yarn behind movie finger down so the loops out of the ways it doesn't if you start doing that it's going to be hard to bring it through gets really fiddly so when you grab the yarn pull it down with your fingers it's out the way and that's got a nice clear shot for getting through that stitch then we'll move our finger over to the right grab the yarn again pull through both loops it's really I think if you can master maybe not master but if you can get fairly confident with your loop stitches is a wonderful technique to do and you can also work on the long grass patch square for my road play map cab which uses the dreaded loop stick stitch but hopefully once you get going you'll ends up with a little bit of a rhythm that works for you if you might not necessarily do it this way you might have a better technique that you prefer if you're new to crocheting I don't recommend this tutorial unless you're winning for a bit of challenge so Never Say Never and eventually your fingers will act as a gauge for your loop stitches they should all end up a very similar size like so so I can do this all the way across to the other end until I've got my 28 noops okay so we go into the stitch finger onto the arm hook to the right above the arm grab the arm pull the loop down so I can get that through the stitch pull it over to the right grab the yarn again pull through both loops so in under above and round into the stitch over secure in under around through the stitch secure okay so I'm just finishing up the last loop stitch man ever not to miss that last stitch check you've got 28 loops like so hopefully all roughly the same size what we're going to do now is we're going to move over to the other side now this is where it becomes important for us to make sure to any work under one body yarn on our chains because it means we can still see our chains nice and clearly so the first thing to do is we're just going to slip stitch over to this side so that first we're just going anywhere neatly as you can and do a little slip stitch and probably do about two we need to find where that first chain is your first chain is there so we're going to put a hook into there do a little slip stitch okay so a couple of little slip stitches over to that first chain there okay then we're going to do the Zaca the same thing we've done here we did here for the loop stitches so I'm going to go back into that first chain see there's all four as chain Rock into there same thing again so finger underneath hook above grab the yarn pull the loop down so it's easy to get the loop through we've the loop over so you can grab this yarn and bring that through so do the same thing again all the way across and you've got 28 loops on the other side working into those chains then we need to find our next chain which is going to be there so I can put my hook into there do the same thing again create a little bit stitch and next Jean - next gene repeat that all the way across working into those chains beginning chains - you have 28 more loom stitches so you'll be sick of loop stitches run into this but it does what the fun part is when you actually get to braid them and join them and the effect I think that's really nice okay finally next Jean so I should do that and then I shall come back please just go out to the very last deep stitch with a little bit fiddley on the end she went tales getting away remember that and finish that the last lipstick and there we get and then what I actually do is I just slip stitch a couple of stitches over the top as well just anywhere just to need to know if just because it makes the edge look a little bit neater and it makes it at like the other side so anyway you can just pop in a couple of tail away a couple of little slip stitches just at the top curves it off looks quite nice okay so I'm going to cut my yarn and just pull the ends great so both ends tail ends end up as what I'm going to call the top okay so let's bring back our project and I shall show you how to join wonderful we had centipedes okay so what we do is I shall just show you how to join it at first and what I'm actually doing is making sure the tail ends are at the top that's so that when we get to the end we can just put some little loose knots in just hold the last one in place and so already torn eating it all off so we're going to do is we're going to divide up our little loop stitches into our units of four so we're going to take just on this side photos we're going to pick the first four little loop so we're going to put our hook into each of those four loops two three and four gains we've got four of those loops then what we're going to do is we're going to take the first four loops on this side my main piece we're going to pop those on one two three and four so make sure you get them in order you're not taking anything further up what we're going to do is we're going to pull these four from this side and then through the four loops from at this side and the easiest way to do that is just to hold on to the four loops so and then just around my full lips again and just pull those through it's a bit curly at first pull those through those four loops okay so now you're just hooking the four from this side okay then we've got the four from this side we know we need to go this side so we're going to take the next four from this side one two three and four I'm going to pull these four through these four so I'm going to grab a little oops and just pull those through okay and if you lose track of which side you need to go you just see you're holding onto the four from this side so we know we need to grab them from the other side so we find the next four from this side so one two three and four got the next fall from there then sometimes it can be easy just put your finger through as well and we're going to pull those four through the other four we'll keep doing that all the way out alternating either side so now we've got the four from this side so we know we need to take the fork in this side one two three four I'm going to bring those three make sure you're not dropping any loops as you come through I haven't gone through the last loop so there we go then grab four from the next side the other side one two three and four so I would say this very fiddly pattern but very rewarding result and this this technique is a technique you would use in hairpin lace for joining if you wanted to to create the braids exactly the same you just don't do all the loop stitches you just want a nice style remember through you could see right save to the other side I'm holding the ones on this side one two three four make sure I get them in order these three one two three four so just repeat this all the way up to the top see you on our loops Julie to see fool two three four and you thankful again is the password then should have four left this side the last four from this side goes through then the last four from this side bring those three all right so when you get to the top there you go you can see it's created the lovely braid effect like the other ones here and then when you get to the top what I'm just doing is I'm taking one of these tail ends and I'm just going to pull one of those just going to pull one of these through the last four loops like so losing my voice and then I'm just going to take the other tail end I'm just going to tie that in a knot for now just until I'm ready to sew up all the ends and that just keeps it in place and stops it unraveling so there we go but what we need to remember for the next one years and I just happen to have another one here is again make sure you've got the right side facing so you can see the loop stitches are more this side so this is going to be the front I'm connecting just to make sure you're connecting all the same side and I always make sure that my tail ends are at the top so that I can do my little or not the important thing to remember is last time we started this side sweet hooked on the first four from this side this time on the next one I'm going to start this side the reason for that is if you don't alternate between which side you start with we'll end up with a very disjointed project so on this one here I started this side of this one then I started this side on this one so on top then I started this side here because they're on top so I can tell that I need to start this side so these ones end up on top so I'm going to start the first full from this side and grab the first four from this side I'm going to pull these four through these four and as I do that you'll see you'll see that the loop stitches from this side or on top so that whatever ones are on top is the side that you started so that should help you remember to which side you need to start next time say because I they're on top and now I started on the left so this time I need to start on the right and then I'm carrying the four from this side so I know I need to grab this side again and you just repeat the same technique pulling the loops through in order so I should just finish up up this row as well and then I'll come back and show you the finished project and also what's doing the edges so just finished up that rogue gone to the top and again I'm just going to take a little tail end just for now put it through the last few loops tie that in place the loose double knot again there we go so that's almost finished but we've still got these looped edges down here which is a little bit crazy you might want to leave those a little trim them so they're like little tassels because they will stay in but what you can do is a similar thing see what we've done here we don't join anything we just take 4 loops 1 2 3 4 foot the first 4 then we take the next 4 1 2 3 4 we pull those 2nd a lot of 4 through off first lots of four we do that all the way out to grab another 4 1 2 3 4 and I'm going to pull those through those 4 and grapple x4 you can do that for either side to need an off the edge - laughed for it doesn't matter how you grab docks a little oops doesn't make any difference and there we go a little bit messy down there sure you can do a neat job so that neat ins off the edge gives you the idea loosens up the edge so it looks similar to this I'm going to redo that and make that look a bit neater so just repeat that I'm going to be that for the other side don't like the same thing and again you can just use one of these tail ends to secure these last four so I'm going to do that and then I shall come back and show you the finished product I get my words out okay do you see that and there we go it creates a much neater edge like so how do we need to do now is to secure these ends here so what I'm going to do to secure those ends you don't have any ends down this end so just turn that round I'm just going to take my last four there leave my hook for now I'm just going to undo these knots here but I'm going to keep that one looped in there actually that one is facing that direction so you can always get a few more hooks just turn that one out and just pop that in there for now a bit fiddly have not you've done this yet so bear with me take one of these tail ends so it through those last four loops like so actually need a sharper sharp or so hooked up those last four and then you can just sew and secured into place as neatly as you can you can always turn it to the back if you have a back preference and then just sew over - its secure maybe back in the opposite direction okay and then just trimmed out any excess then the next one here I just left on my hook let's undo this knot okay and very carefully don't lose those there I put my hook through those four so I can take that two and then I'm going to thread on my yarn needle put on my yarn here put it through these four and I want to do it from this direction because these are four loops are facing that direction so I want to use a ten end from here so it pulls it over into that direction otherwise I'd end up with it sort of two facing the same direction we don't want that so threaded those on and then just sew over completely lost my tail end why is this happening to me I'm really filly I'm panicking as what is panicking thread those onto my needle that's it and then sew down so that's facing in that direction I don't know if anyone is very noticeable what it's very good at noticing thing you may have noticed is that you five loops on that one actually did want to loop too many as you may later certified bush I was going to know and then just so the tail end on the Mac as neatly as you can to secure and just repeat that for all the other ends making sure they're facing the right direction and then so in any remaining turns like these ones and then I should do that and then I shall come back and show you the finished project okay and there we go I've tied in all my ends and I've secured all the a little sort of cable braid things and there we go there's the finished piece so you could use this if you had a lot of patience you could turn this into a really unique jumper pattern if you have the patience the edge is not wonderfully neat but you could add a trim if you want you to do some ribbing or something whenever you are making this for it's entirely up to you behave if it's inspired you you can see on the back you looks quite nice as well I hope it inspires you to try something new and I will see you soon so create a fun thanks for watching guys bye
