Please explain how to dehydrate dill

hey guys small town gardener here first of all one apologize about there's a lot of storms and stuff coming I want to take this video real quick because we're going to be harvesting or dill and drying it I always have a lot of people ask me what it is I do with all that deal that I grow and I have this and three other spots where it's growing now as you see here on the tops I'm going to let these continue to go to seed but all these we're going to pick now depending on what time you get to plant these will depend on how much you get and how tall they get now we've been having some real crazy weather hot-cold hot-cold hot-cold so these do have they've already started the seed but I do have a lot that is not so what we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and get all this in here and I'm going to meet you inside where of course there's no wind and I can show you what we do next hey guys we're back in the kitchen now this is all the deal that I removed from the garden I spent a lot out there I just rinsed this really good in cool water there's no reason for me to really scrub these or anything like that because I don't use anything in the garden out usually sprays or anything the most I've ever used is usually some BT or some homemade organic pesticide but I didn't use anything at all on these because we have Swallowtail caterpillars out there that love deep distill and I'm fine with sharing it with them because I want them around in the garden so let me tell you exactly what we're going to do here like I said I've watched these just put them on an old kitchen towel that we use whenever we rinse our food so we try to absorb as much of this water as possible so what we're going to do is and this is the so simple that you'd be surprised what you need is you need a good dehydrator now what I have this is one of my trays here for my excalibur dehydrator and I really recommend this one it is a little bit more than your standard one you're going to find it like Walmart or Target but it does a great job it's never failed me and it does like I said this just excellent recommend it what we're going to do is we're going to take this deal now rather than break off all these little pieces and put them on here because when they dry out they're going to be extremely light they're just going to fly out everywhere you definitely don't want that so what you're going to do is after cleaning them off making sure that there's no bad ones or anything like that you're just going to take them and you're gonna lay them on your dehydrator and that's it now people always ask me how long do i do hydrate it what temperature do i dehydrated at what I typically do on most things unless I'm doing like beef jerky is 125 another reason why I choose 125 is because it's a very slow process it gives it plenty of time to to dry out thoroughly and usually I do it overnight and usually is fine for most things this will actually dry quicker than overnight so doesn't really make too big of a difference but it helps keep everything nutritional value much higher when you do it at low temperature like that because remember all the hydrogen's do is they get something warm and they blow that warm air on it and then through that drying process it you know dries out your food now if you do it too high you can actually cook your food so that's why you have to be very careful that's why I believe the lower the temperature the longer the better so we're going to go ahead and like I said we're going to put all these on here go through them and we'll probably get about nine trays or so out of this and then I'll be back when these are done to show you the next step all right guys we're back now we went ahead and let these dehydrate overnight and I just kind of piled them up on here you know they were they were much bigger at the time so you know it has shrunk down quite a bit kind of made playing a little weave and that's what they'll do and basically this is how you want to do it you want to get you a bowl you want to take one of them pull them off here and you see the stick is dry which kept it from blowing away and basically you just kind of rub it with your fingers and this stuff will come right off then you just lick the low sticks on there a little stem what I do is I get it all off like this and you may have to go back in there just kind of break it up a little bit and you'll notice that this is going to taste a lot better than the stuff that you bought the store many times the stuff that you buy at the store isn't even green so you see that is now the test take a look at a time to get all these off but it's well worth it there's nothing better than having your own spices at home then you just like this take them all off very easy very good your house is going to smell like like pickles it's awesome so that's it now I had all the trades going this is going to take me some time let me get you in here real quick for another look you see you're going to get some big pieces like this you just kind of break it up a little bit just with your hand just break it up they'll come right in apart before you know it you just going to have deals that come in here pick out a little bit of the stems that's it so let me go ahead and get everything that we have done and my guys we're back now I got through taking all this deal here's the stems they're still a little bit left in there that I could get but a majority of what I got is right in here if you look closely there is even let's see if I can focus in there's a few little stems in here nothing really big and it's not bad I mean it's going to be very hard for you to get it 100% without any you know tiny little pieces of stem in there and you know it might depend on how you know how you go about doing it you may take a lot more time to do it I just try to do you know as much as I possibly can and it works out fine there's really no issues I usually go through it and sifted a couple of times to make sure that I get it so now I don't know if I told you exactly how many we use but that bunch that I showed you the beginning of the video you've got big four trays so this is what portrays is going to make you now this is a very good presentation of what it looks like so let me actually get a measuring cup we're going to pour this in the measuring cup in that way I can show you how much we got from four trays of the deal that we harvested so we'll be right back okay guys we're back as you can see we measured out the deal and we got just about a cup so that isn't bad for four trays now I know you know a lot of people will just go buy theirs and there's nothing wrong with that and you may see as being a little tedious to do this but you know there is a huge difference in the flavor and the freshness and just the fact of knowing that you did this yourself so I hope you guys enjoyed this I hope you got something great from it and if you have any questions or anything or any comments please post them below if you enjoyed this video don't forget to hit the like button and if you could you know go ahead and share my videos on Facebook and let other people know or Google+ if you use that and that's about it guys I hope you all have a great day bye
