Please explain how to fix an rv awning that will not retract properly

from George Woolley in Sandy Utah I have an awning that will not retract evenly I have to go onto the roof to pull the awning back about two inches to fully secure it how can I fix this problem George I'm assuming it's a patio awning one of the larger ones it's on the on the passenger side typically what happens in this case there's a couple of scenarios here one is that the awning where it attaches to the awning rail at the top of the coach has shifted forward or rearward in other words when the awning is installed it's supposed to be installed with the arms totally parallel with one another totally straight and the awning fabrics centered between the awning arms evenly on both sides well if you slip one slip if you slip the awning either to the rear of the coach or to the front of the coach it's going to um it's going to wind up crooked in other words unevenly as you state because the top portion which should remain secure has shifted in the awning rail check to be sure that there usually would they mount a screw through the awning rail at one end or both end or even in the middle to make sure that that awning cord that cord that's in the end that holds it into the rail does not shift obviously I think yours has shifted so either that screw has come loose or possibly they never installed it in the first place that's one reason to have an awning unwind or wind up unevenly the other is that if the fabric itself was stretched in any way either with heavy rainfall that pooled water in there and the actual fabric of the canvas or the the acrylic actually got stretched then the net would also cause it to show like it's rolling up on evenly there's really not much to do there other than to replace the fabric the third thing you want to check is to make sure that indeed the awning arms both at the fore and at the rear are indeed parallel to one another and that they do run straight in other words perpendicular to the side wall or to the awning rail itself because if the awning arms are parallel but they're like a trapezoid and they're crooked it's going to cause that awning to roll up crooked as well so make sure that the awning awning arms the front and rear arms are indeed parallel to one another and perpendicular to the awning rail make sure that the the awning where it attaches to the awning rail has not shifted for or aft as well and make sure that everything is tight and secure if it still rolls up crooked and the other thing to do would be to measure the awning rail or measure the the awning canopy itself to make sure that it is clear and that it's plumb and straight and true if it's been stretched you'll see it in a measurement if you go corner to corner on a tightly tightly strung awning you'll be able to tell if it's out of out of whack there
