Please explain how to sound british: 11 typical british expressions - learn english

hello good morning Happy New Year today
we have 11, I don't know why 11, but 11 typical British expressions. I
promised you 10. I'm going to do 11 because: why not?
one extra is always better. Actually, there's a bonus one
so there's technically 12, but there you go .So, there are 12 typical British
expressions that is written as 11 and promised as 10. I hope that you're having
a fantastic new year, a fantastic wonderful new year and 2019 is
going to be a great year because this year I'm going to start uploading not one,
but two YouTube videos per week typically on Thursday and another day
I'm going to decide when. Okay, so today we have 11 very typical British
expressions. I am British. I'm from the Isle of Wight. I've lived
all over England. I've lived in London for like a long time maybe seven ten ten
years?! Wow, I'm old. So, we're gonna start and some of these expressions you may
already know and some may be new and what I want you to do is choose your
favorite one of the twelve (eleven) and write down in the comments below
using a sentence. Please, try it because it's great. Okay, so, the first one is
barmy, barmy. Okay, I love this word. Barmy means a bit crazy or a bit silly.
He's a bit barmy you know, he's a bit (strange noise time) he's a bit crazy. My goodness he's barmy for
wanting to go to the park at night I don't know something crazy.
He's barmy for wanting to spend all of that money on a new car. OK, he's crazy,
she's crazy He's barmy. It's an adjective: barmy, barmy.
OK, two syllables barmy. So, for example, some people think that I'm a bit
barmy. Am I barmy? I hope not. A very typical British
expression, which brings me on to number two:
Berserk. Berserk! Usually used with the verb go. He went berserk. I go berserk.
It means to become very angry, to become insanely angry like I'm really angry
okay, so for example, last night somebody woke me up in my sleep and I
went berserk: Why are you waking me up? I didn't, it's not true, I don't really go
berserk. I love this expression because berserk it actually originates from the
Vikings, the Vikings. This expression is very old. Berserk, it relates to something
called a Berserker which was a soldier in the Viking armies who used to run in
crazily and just used to run, really aggressive and crazy and they'd say: Oh no! it's the berserkers. So, the actual expression originates from a soldier in
the Viking army, this crazy soldier that went in with no or little armor or no
shields and just killed and killed and killed. These were called berserkers, and
now we have this beautiful expression to go berserk, to go crazy with anger. I love
these expressions. OK, number three is possibly the most common one. Some people
think it's a rude word, they think it's a swear word, a curse word. Not really, it's
kind of a replacement for that and it is bloody hell! oh bloody hell! bloody hell!
okay, bloody hell is a polite way of saying the other things. It's an
exclamation of oh bloody hell! In fact, we use the word bloody a lot. I'm
going to do a video about bloody in the near future. Bloody is kind of an
intensifier, like it makes things stronger: Oh bloody tired, or bloody crazy
day. So, for example, bloody hell! is an
expression and it's a replacement for bad So, if something goes wrong, you say: bloody
hell! It's a politer way it's not going
be really rude in England, but it's really common in the films which brings
me on to the bonus word which is bloody norah. Haha bloody norah! Oh bloody
norah it's the same it's the same as bloody hell. It's commonly used. It's more
used with older, more maturer people, but some people still say bloody norah bloody
hell is more common, but bloody norah is also common. You may notice that Nora is
actually a name of a person a girl's name, a female name. Norah in this sense
doesn't relate to a person it actually relates to: horror
it's: bloody horror!, but they actually changed the sound over time and people
pronounced it differently, and it went from bloody horror to bloody norah, so now
people say oh bloody norah. So, that was number three write down in the comments
below if you think oh bloody hell these words are crazy
I love these expressions. Number four is: bog standard. bog standard. OK,
bog standard means nothing special, the standard, typical model. You know, it's not
got extras. Let me give you an example. You buy a new car. In your car you
can have many options like: metallic paints or leather seats or a super big
stereo or something like this, and you can buy all the extras or you can just
go for the bog standard the bog standard which is the normal one. Yeah, there's
nothing special about my car it's just kind of bog standard, but a lovely
expression. It's an adjective my car is bog standard my life is bog
standard no, it's not, it's not, it's special. Number five, I think number five.
is Cheers. I've got a coffee I don't have a
beer I'm trying to be healthy for 2019 check me out. I'm trying not to
drink too much, so far so good, but here we have a coffee. Now, usually we say: cheers like this. Cheers with a drink but we
can also use the word cheers to say thank you "ah cheers,
thank you" "Oh, Roy. I brought you some cake!" "No, I'm trying to be healthy, but
cheers anyway" I really am trying to be healthy. Give me some support! Come on!
Number six is: cost a bomb this is a fixed expression. It costs a bomb.
Costs a bomb is something that's very expensive. So, for example, a Ferrari costs
a bomb. it costs a bomb. My dog Leia she eats Filet Mignon and good things.
She eats better than me. Where is she? she eats better than me. She costs me a bomb.
Write down in the comments below what costs you a bomb or what you think costs
a bomb. OK, number seven! The curtain twitcher. Curtains are things on
this side of the window and curtain twitchers, we all have them, we all have
them in our lives. Curtain twitchers are these people that go
to the window, and look and watch Usually old people, famously old people,
although I do know some young people who are also curtain twitchers. These are your
nosey neighbours, your inquisitive curious annoying neighbours, who want to discover
and find out everything about your life OK, so they're the people that sit
at the window: you're talking with someone on the street and then they're
like and you see them and they panic. You know curtain twitchers nosey neighbours:
annoying people these people who say: "what are they doing? who are they?" These people that are curious about your
life usually they stand at windows looking out!
I love this expression I love this expression. Sadly, towards the end of his
life my grandfather became a curtain twitcher. All the time he'd be there at
the curtain saying "who's that?" "granddad, leave them alone
leave them alone they are just talking "I want to know what they're talking
about" "leave them alone" Curtains twitchers. Love this one this
expression. Number eight, eight that's technically nine because we had the
bonus one, Number eight is a doddle. a doddle. A doddle is something that's really
easy. A lot of people say a piece of cake something like this but in Britain we
quite commonly say it's a doddle. So for example making YouTube videos for me is
a doddle making videos is a doddle okay something
really easy what is not a doddle for me? Oh maths maths is not a doddle. it is
not a doddle. Wow I have problems with maths which is why I teach English and we do
not learn numbers, numbers confuse me. So, you can tell me in the comments below what's a doddle for you.
Is maths a doddle for you? can you help me with maths because I'm so lost? The
next one is a dog's dinner. now my dog as I've said before eats very well she eats
really well but usually we use this expression with make to make a dog's
dinner of something to make a dog's dinner of something so make a dog's
dinner of something it's usually when you make a complete mess of something
when you you do a really bad job you make a dog's dinner of it so it doesn't
have to be related to food but the other day I made a presentation and I really
made a dog's dinner of it because it was a complete mess it was a disaster. love this
expression it basically means that dogs dinners are a mess but Leia eats
fillet steak I'm so envious of my dog but in typical British expressions to
make a dog's dinner of something what have you made the dog's dinner of
recently? probably this video I've got to edit it so the
penultimate one the second to last one is a typical expression from London
particularly in London not so common outside of London but people use it they
use the word geezer, geezer. Geezer. it relates to a guy it's like saying oh he's a
geezer. Geezer is another word for man okay oh look at this this geezer. This geezer over
here. I'm a geezer. I was talking to this geezer yesterday it's not common outside
of London but I like it my friend Nick from London
he's a geezer hello geezer, how are you? he's probably never going to watch this
because he doesn't want to learn English but there you go
and the final word today is gutted gutted is an adjective
I'm gutted I was gutted and it means to be very sad or devastated about
something so after I made a dog's dinner of my presentation I was gutted very
very sad your guts are like your organs in your body and
if you're gutted it's like they've been removed so you know that feeling when
you're very very sad and it feels like somebody has removed your
organs that's what gutted means it means very
very sad tell me below in the comments below what has made you feel very sad
recently what has made you feel gutted hopefully nothing on that note I hope
you're having a fantastic starts 2019 I know we are it's great but lots of love
