Please explain how to! | blair fowler

hey guys the other day I was craving my grandmother's apple pie so I decided to pull out the recipe book that she gave me for my birthday and make the pie and then I uploaded a picture on the Instagram and a lot of you wanted the recipe and a video showing you guys how I made it so here is that video without further ado this is grandma Fowler's apple pie recipe the first thing you need to do is corer peel and slice 6 granny smith apples and I've already done this to four so now I'm just showing you the final two and please excuse my bandaged finger I picked up the curling iron from the wrong end and my thumb definitely got the worst of it and I totally went out of frame when I was peeling the apples so I'm gonna go straight from pouring and to slicing so basically you just want to get all of the skin off the apples and yeah now we're going to go into slicing them so you just want to do thin slices throughout the Apple and toss it into the bowl pour about a tablespoon of lemon juice over the apples and toss this is going to help prevent browning and make sure they don't get too mushy and then you want to gradually add 3/4 cup granulated white sugar so I am just kind of toughing that and then adding a little more tossing a little more adding a little more you get the gist you hate the kitchen now you want to mix together 1 tablespoon flour 1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon 1/4 of a teaspoon of nutmeg and 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt so I mixed all that together and then I dumped it into the apple concoction we are making and now I'm just tossing that and you just want to make sure that you are being careful when you're tossing the apples you don't want to be too rough with them because that can make them brown and then they'll get mushy really quickly when you are in the oven now you want to pour the apples into a strainer that is placed over a larger bowl to catch all of the juices and let this sit for about 15 minutes and then you will see all of the juices have been released and it's better to catch it now than to let it sit in your pie and make your crust all soggy but we don't want to waste this because it tastes super good so we're gonna put it in a microwave safe container I'm just using a Pyrex measuring cup and then you want to add 2 tablespoons of butter so I'm just slicing it so that it melts evenly and it doesn't really burn and stuff like that and then you want to place it in the microwave for about 6 minutes or as long as it takes to bubble and boil and make a thicker caramelized type consistency instead of a liquid and then you want to take your pie crust and line your pie pan my glass type in is actually at a friend's house where my last pie it went home with them and I haven't got it back yet and I'm just using pre-made pie vicos berry or pie crust you guys can make your own if you want I find it doesn't taste that different so I just cheat and buy the pre-made kind and then you want to cut the top section into one-inch sections vertically or going down so we are just cutting that you don't have to be super perfect with it but about 1 inch section now our caramelized concoction is ready and you guys know I do not like caramel so the fact that I love this just goes to say how amazing it is so you want to pour it back into a bowl and then you want to toss all of the caramel mixture stuff I guess we could just really call it caramel but that's not exactly what it is um you just want to toss that in with all of your apples and kind of redistribute it as evenly as you can so now I'm just pouring my apple mixture into my pie crust and then you want to smooth it down so that it's pretty much the same all the way around you don't want one edge of your pie to be like a way higher than the other edge or something like that maybe that's just me being picky but my grandmother always said you gotta miss your apples out so now after this I'm gonna go ahead and start laying down the strip's and you just kind of can go in size order and lay them from the center to the outside and stuff and I actually decided that I was going to eliminate one of the side strips right here to give it a little more of a gap that way you can really see the basket weave and then I'm gonna take another pie crust so I actually have to buy four at a time because they come in packs of two so I'm only using three so that gives me another one if I need to you can just put it in the freezer and say that for the next time and so I'm just cutting these again and then you want to list back every other one of the pie crusts and you're just making a basket wheats motion so it's probably easier to watch me do this than for me to try to walk you guys through it but you can see for every other one I'm flipping every other one over if that makes any sense at all I don't know any other way to explain it to you guys other than just kind of showing you and say that when my grandmother was showing me this is just how she said to do it and it's the best so then you just want to push all of the sides in together and this is the best time to go through and kind of straighten up any of the lines if you need to and then I'm just gonna take a knife and I am getting rid of all the excess dough around the edges so that it makes a pretty edge and stuff like that so I'm just doing that and then you want to take a four and I am just going around all of the edges this is going to seal the edge so it's gonna really make a definitive crust on it and then it is also just a cute little way to decorate your pie so I'm going all around that and I'm doing that and then a little bit of the excess kind of hangs over a little bit so you can just feel around and if you take any of it off you can just use your knife and kind of slice it off really quickly like I am right there so now the last but certainly not least step is to take some granulated white sugar that is mixed with some cinnamon and sprinkle it around the top and then you want to put it into an oven that is set at 425 degrees for 30 minutes and if your edges start to get brown cover them with aluminum foil and that way they won't burn that's probably the biggest and most important tip of this entire thing you don't want your corners or edges or press to Brown too much because then they burn so now the pie is out of the oven and I let it sit and cool for a little while so I am cutting myself my first life and it totally falls apart here in a second I don't know what it is with me but cutting the first slice out of a pie or cake or anything I'm always horrible at it that it tastes just the same and it's amazing so I hope you guys enjoyed this video if you guys make grandma Fowler's Pie film it and leave it as a video response so I can show her because I know that she would just be so excited so I'll see you guys later
