hello my name is John muggeridge i work in fidelity investments and i'm here today to explain a little bit about the origami cranes that are being passed out at waterfire and how to fold one we've been folding these cranes now for about 10 years for water fire it's been a wonderful relationship and the crane itself according to Japanese folklore if you fold a thousand of them your greatest wish will come true and over the years the crane has become a symbol of peace and a symbol of hope for many people and today we'll show you how to fold a crane and explain a little bit about why they distributed at the fire first thing you need to do is get a piece of paper that's relatively square this is the paper from this year 2013 and put it down on the table with the colored side facing down we're going to fold it in half four times twice along the long diagonal and twice along the square side so let me show you how you do that just grab the corner and try to align it the best you can with the far corner and make a good crease turn it the other way same thing we're doing it diagonally grab the corner fold it the best you can to the far corner make a good crease and you open it back up and now we're going to do with the lengthwise bring it up line it up fold it rotate that and do it the last time lengthwise line up the edges unfold it so now we have good creases so now what we have is a square sheet of paper with a number of folds in it and you'll see this two sides with writing on them those go towards you and what you'll do now is use your creases to take the side pieces and fold them in just like that so we do that on that side and then we take it on this side and fold it in put it down and just make that crease right down the middle so you've got something that looks like that with with the little the letters and the logos facing you set up down with a point facing you you grab the far corner and bring it into the middle and line this edge up with the middle line so now we're doing that and making the fold we're going to the exact same thing on the other side take this corner bring it into the middle line up the edges so it aligns with the middle line and make a nice crease so now you've got that in the middle so turn it over and do exactly the same thing on the other side so bring the point into the middle line it up make you a crease turn it around do the exact same thing so we've done this same step now four times so now you have a shape it looks kind of like a kite take this top piece and just fold it over make a good crease bring it up fold it over the other direction and make a good crease and then fold it right back up to where you started and I'll lay it down in front of you now what you're going to do is open it up grab the far point and we're going to bring it up to the top like this and you're going to create a shape it looks a little bit like a canoe you can see it's kind of getting a little boat shape to it so just bring it up and you know fuss with a little bit and fold it right in and you'll get something that looks like that and we'll do that exact same thing on the other side as well bring it up you've got your little boat shape fold it into the middle so now both sides are like that one side has got legs one side does not you want the leg side facing down towards you bring this corner into the middle and align this edge with the middle edge so similar to the step that we used earlier again this edge into the middle this corner into the middle so now you've got that shape and again turn it over do the exact same thing on the far side make the alignment fold corner into the middle make the alignment fold so now you've got that shape now turn it open up the side like that and then bring this point all the way up and inside so like this comes right up inside and then you can actually just fold that those two sides around it like that will do the same with this side you open it up bring that side right up into the middle and then fold the sides around it so now you've got a shape that looks like this we're almost done these two sides here and here are the wings bring that down bring that down which are the wings so you've got that you're using our paper the side with a little green is the head fold it down to a nice head level and wherever you'd like it and then fold it just kind of crease it inside out here to make the head bring the tail down to whatever you think tail height should be and you're almost done and now we just gently tug on the wings to inflate the body of the crane and there you have your very own crane thank you very much for your attention I hope you enjoyed this crane folding session I also hope you were able to successfully fold your claim if not keep trying you get better at it as time goes along and they're actually it's a fun little skill to have so thank you again from fidelity thank you again from water fire and we're looking forward to seeing you
