good morning michelle k here i'm a local realtor in long beach california and today i'm talking about a whole house fan we installed one oh probably i don't know maybe it was about 18 months ago and really to start talking about it i wanted to show you i'm going to start the exterior of the roof to the left of the chimney that is a solar powered attic exhaust fan so what that does obviously it's run by the sun and it's it the fan spins and it extracts the hot air from inside the attic and then to the right of the chimney are barrel vents and if i back up you can see another one and another type of event would be the whirly type bird and we replaced them because actually the barrel vents give you a little bit more air flow coming out and that was surprising to me but anyway with a whole house fan what it is is you have a large fan in your attic that pulls cool air through your windows now because it's pulling up to the attic the air has to go somewhere and that is why you have to do calculations to see the approximate square footage of your attic area and then how big of a fan you're putting in and the draw it's it's pulling and then how many of these barrel vents you'd have to put in so the air would have somewhere to escape because otherwise you'd just be pulling up into the attic and really working that fan too hard and it not being very effective so i'm just going to go inside now and i'm going to show you what the what the where the whole house fan um is mounted and in the opening for there's really not too much to see but um let's go take a look okay here we are in my hallway and here's the controls for the fan i'm going to turn it on and here you can hear the i can't really see it but you can hear the baffles open up and that's the fan uh now i know it sounds pretty loud but i'm standing right here in my small hallway it's roofing up but as you walk away it's my my tvs over here for our viewing and listening pleasure and you know you can't hear it and so the company that we used was airscape it's air a ir scape s-c-a-p-e and like i said i've written in the blog that what's unique about them instead of the fan being mounted right here about this box on top of that box is a tube that goes and hangs over the joists and at the bottom of the tube is where the fan is so you don't have the the fan directly on the joist and causing the loud vibration so that's it i would uh highly recommend it i think it's a fantastic green move and um if you have any questions give me a call my name is michelle kay and i'm a local realtor in long beach my phone number is 562-243-2171 a great day
