hey guys free tip Friday back in my deck job here sorry about the jackhammer in the background the guy across the street jackhammer today's dip is repairing cedar shake siding here that's where the old deck handrail was coming out I put in my new half post here now I've got to fix this cedar debacle here so what I'm going to do use my multi-tool I'm going to cut right along that joint but you got to be sure you don't cut right through the cedar and the tar paper you want to stop a little bit short and just break the shingles off kind of like we did the decking in the last tip video and see there snaps off really easy so you don't have to cut really close you can just break it off no problem and then if there are any chairs in this in the tar paper you want to use that red duct tape to reseal those and then you - Ingle up and then right before you put these last shingles in run a big B the silicone or exterior-grade sealant like Sikaflex and that'll seal that joint so there's no way that water can get down and wicken behind those shingles now this is the easiest way that I've done it it's probably by no means the technically best way to do it but it works fine it looks great and if you try and like slide shingles up and behind you got to cut nails you're going to destroy the waterproof membranes and I really can't think of another way to do it that isn't a total nightmare so this is how I roll I use the shingle for a 1/2 inch spacer start my first row I just set it on the thickness of a shingle your first row you want to double it up two layers on your first row and then once they're nailed all you just slide that out you got a nice clean reveal also before you put your miters together just for good measure put a little bita silicone right in that joint that way no waters never getting in there all right so before we put in the last piece I'll put a big B the silicon along here now that silicones in there when this squeezes up its gonna seal in there and then I switch to an 18-gauge so you don't leave those big ugly crown staple holes now when they paint over it and look nice and sexy he'll never even know that was a patch job
