at the wanting to do this for a good couple of years now but I finally got around to making my own nettle fertilizer as something so easy and practically free and it doesn't take that long now I collected the nettles at the beginning of July it's now the beginning of December so I've left it a good long time now but it can take you as little as six weeks to make your own fertilizer so it's not very long at all and like I said it's really easy to do so this is nettle fertilizer what I did is I connected it I cut it I scrunched it up I broke up the leaves and the stems and I placed them into this container now you don't have to use a container this big you can use the bucket and you'll be diluting your fertilizer down so you don't need this much of it it's just I saw these containers at a car boot and I thought that'd be amazing to make my own fertilizers and what I'm going to do is make some for me and some for my dad as well as see we can share it and hopefully or last a long time as well that yeah you can use a bucket you don't need to use sealed containers so yeah cut your metal scrunch them up place them into your container or your bucket weigh them down with a brick or something heavy and then just cover them with water and leave them somewhere for six weeks or more and then you'll have some really nice stinking fertilizer because I do warn you it does smell I'm quite lucky with these containers because they've got lids on them and they're sealed so they don't smell all the time but I know as soon as I take the lid off it's going to stink so just be prepared so yeah I've got a nettle fertilizer which is really high in nitrogen so it's really good for foliage so I'll be putting on my brassicas and my salad greens and things like that what I'm going to do next year once my comfrey is nicely established I'm going to use the contrary to make some fertilizer because that's also high in nitrogen but it's also got potassium in it which is good for your flowers and your fruit you can make that in exactly the same way as a nettle fertilizer and you can also do the same with seaweed as well so lots of choices they're all really really easy to make but I just opted for the nettle because there were loads of nettles around the farm in Wales so this has actually come home with me on the four-and-a-half hour journey home so yeah like I said I was grateful for the lids because it would have just stunk the car out so now that's been sitting in the container for a good couple of months now I'm going to strain it into this empty one just using a sieve so I placed the sieve on top of that container and then somehow lift this one up and pour it in just to get all the the nettle foliage out of the liquid and then all I do is I will pop the liquid into these bottles and I got these from ebay but obviously you can use old milk bottles or any old sort of bottles really just label it up and make sure you don't drink it laughs ooh I've got two can we're going to give one to my dad could have given it to him for Christmas so but I'll just give it to him I think it'd be quite grateful for it next year so yeah I'm going to strain it attempt to strain it into this one should have some nose plugs or something actually gonna say it's not that bad he just hit me look right it's gonna be completely worth it for the allotment so I can just deal with this smell for a few minutes I'm sure and the allotment will pain you at got lots of goodies next year [Applause] so that's it the liquid has been strained and there's actually a little bit more than half of this container fill up with the good stuff so I'm really really chuffed with it but there's so much of it I thought that there was gonna be a bit less because obviously most of the container was fill up with the foliage but other I'm complaining because you know it's better to have more than you know less and so obviously I'll keep some I'll give some to my dad but what I might do is do a little giveaway over on the blog in a couple of weeks time I'll give away one of the containers of my homemade nettle fertilizer I'll share the goodness around but yeah I'll do a little giveaway on the blog in a couple of weeks time when I get a little bit more spare time to put that on so keep an eye out for that and also what I didn't do here is I didn't empty the whole contents into the pot because one it was heavy and also because there was so much liquid already I thought there's no point emptying all in and creating a big mess but if you have only a small amount or just a bucket then you can just empty all the foliage onto the sieve and let all the giveness drip down and obviously just get the most from it but like I said there's so much here and what it might do is just spread some of this metal over on the beds when I've cleared the Brassica bed that is another job to do yeah that's it something so simple and so easy to do can take as little as six weeks and you've got this goodness that you can feed your allotment with to create hopefully nice bountiful harvests and I'm hoping that next year obviously I'll be using the nettle fertiliser but hopefully I'll have some conferee fertilizer and maybe some seaweed as well if I can find some see you next and that yeah it's going to do your allotment so much good and was something so easy and simple to make it is completely worth it and I'll just add that the smell really isn't that bad like so many people were warning me about it but I don't know if it's just me like I don't mind it like when I was pouring it it was quite bad and every now and again you've got a really big whiff and it was horrible but now they can't just immune to it now but yeah it really doesn't smell that bad and like I said it's completely worth it for the allotment so just grin and bear it and next year you'll have lots of harvest so it is worth it one thing I will just quickly add this is a concentrate so you need to dilute it down don't put this fertilizer straight onto your crops because it will damage them you need to dilute it with water now this is very rough but you can dilute it one part fertilizer to 20 part water or what I'm going to do is just fill up my watering can with water and then add a cup full of my natural fertilizer liquid but yeah you need to use it as a concentrate do not put it straight onto your fruit and flowers and vegetables and that's it that's all it takes to make your own fertilizers so I hope you get a chance to make your own because it is really rewarding but if you don't get a chance to make your own little fertilizer then head on over to the blog in a couple of weeks time and and you might be able to win some of my fertilizer so there we go I really do hope you get a chance to try it because it is good and the smell isn't that bad so yeah I'm going to just transfer this into these containers now the best thing to use is a funnel I don't have a funnel and a whole local hardware shop is not open now so I haven't got a funnel but what I'm going to do is just use this cup to transfer the liquid into the bottles it's going to be a bit messy but I can always have a bath later Conte they starting to get dark now so I'm going to do that store it in the shed maybe have a cup of tea because I quite like the allotment in the evening there's something so peaceful about it and the Christmas lights are starting to come out so it's nice so I'm just going to enjoy a few peaceful moments in the shed and the first of all I need to deal with this so thank you for watching and I will see you all next time
