what's up YouTube this is Brad from the weekend handyman Channel today we are going to be replacing a low voltage thermostat for an oil burner furnace the first thing we have to do is go downstairs to the basement and shut the power off to the furnace very important okay so we've made our way to the dungeon and we're just gonna flip the service switch right here on furnace alternatively you can also use your emergency switch which is typically at the top of the stairs heading down to the basement or it may be somewhere else to look a little more conveniently located we can shut that off okay so now that we've shut the power off to the unit we've pulled the panel off here and we're gonna take a look at the low voltage terminals on the control board here and what we want to do is we want to find out what wires are connected where these should be color-coded in a perfect world but that's not always the case so we're gonna you know check here and confirm it so again we've only got a two wire system here really simple it's just gonna be 24 volts is gonna be your are going to you thermostat and then W here is gonna be the 24 volts coming back telling the heat to come on alternatively if you've got cooling you'd have a third wire here which be yellow and then you may have a control for a fan as well which would be green and also some thermostats will have a common and that will be power to allow your thermostat to run without batteries basically so now that we know where our wires are and what we have we're gonna go upstairs and connect the thermostat okay so we've checked to make sure that the furnace is in fact off someone who's gonna pull the cover off here to our thermostat and we are going to take it off the wall and it's freshly painted on to the wall no yes I you know being that I knew I was going to change it I didn't care about painting it we're gonna be a little bit more careful with that Oh paint cracks pretty easy one more actually I think it's C yeah there's only one screw holding it in that's all you need and a little bit of paint not all of those layers of paint that were on the thermostat were mine you didn't pick out the yellow no I did pick up the yellow that's good good do not dispose of your mercury thermostat properly I'll try mm-hmm so being an oil burner this is just simple to wire setup all right you can't really get any easier than this so we want to make sure thermostat is going to be level and this particular one has a tiny little edge which is just kind of ridiculous we're gonna have to do something a little special here okay we're gonna go for about there [Applause] okay we have to Mars sounds like your jokes for some it there for a second think I just needed to get the hole ready you're gonna have some patching to do because I think it's perfectly level that's good good six times a charm so when wiring we're just gonna match up our colors with the corresponding connections down on the furnace yeah I guess somebody could if they wanted make a Taj Mahal out of this yes I noticed that oh boy that's funny okay connection made we switched our thermostat to gas or oil because we are or oil sir Joker there yeah this is dope good thing no not really we switch to Dean yeah okay so we got all the scheduling set and the time to set everything set to 50 apparently cuz well somebody's cheap we're in a renovation project nobody's living here yeah can't be comfortable there aren't renovations anyway we gonna go to our emergency switch and our service switch turn them back on and then test the thermostat okay so that's how you install a nice fancy $30.00 thermostat 25 at $25 programmable thermostat does weekend's weekdays the other you know there's like a thousand different settings you can put in there heat works we can go into manual here hold click and I don't know I'm thinking here that video but burner just kicked up yes it did tada doesn't get much easier than that nope except for putting holes along yes the cement plaster something something law yes like the video subscribe we have lots of cool projects way cooler than thermostats comment down below if you have any questions or comments or concerns I assure you bread is legitimately an HVAC technician so oh geez yes let's turn although it would be what would you expect not just turn you turn it on though
