Please explain how to: roofing - capping and installing ridge vent

hey that our Prince Bobby here today hey folks today we're going to show you how to cap a roof we're also going to use some ridge vent on this roof also and so we're down on the ground first and we're cutting up our tabs so let's just show you how to do that real quick we're going to cap it with three tabs so a guy our singles right here just take your speed square lay it across here and just get the center of the break there take your knife score down score this back of the shank and then you can just pull it right on off and you can do each single that way you get enough cut up before you go up on top now let's talk about how many do you need now typically a square of shingles which is three bundles that will cover 100 linear feet of roof okay we've got about thirty eight foot that we're going to cover here we're going to double tap it I'll show you how how we do that so we'll actually need probably about two bundles to actually have enough tabs here to get a cab so let's go up top and we'll continue on and show you the next step okay friends rough on the roof here we're getting ready to start capping this thing as you can see we have our plywood cut back at the top all the way down the roof line here because we want to ventilate this thing with some of this good GAF Cobra ridge vent today and we prolong the life of this route a little bit so let's get started here okay friends now let's talk about the chocolate us a line here so we can keep our ridge vent nice and straight so what you want to do is take this piece of Ridge fat just take one piece and kind of eyeball it okay get it fitting like you want to there's usually a line scribed in the center here you can just kind of keep working with it till you get it where you think it's in the center put your mark on this end of the house go down on the other end of the house with your crease of ridge vent do the same thing and then get your helper to help you chop a lot down through here okay so when we do start nailing this ridge vent down you can start here and you can keep it on this straight line all the way down so capping will look nice and straight all the way down the roofline okay folks now we've got to start out here on the end we're not going to run ridge cap all the way to the end okay so we're actually we made a mark here at 14 inches we're actually going to start the ridge vent at that point and it's going to end on the other end at about 14 inches side into the other roof okay so look nice and equal now so first thing you got to do is go ahead and start capping now I've done a double cap this house it gives it more of a thicker look kind of like the capping shingles that you would use on a architectural type shingle roof so I'm actually double cap this it looks a little better so let's start up here at the end we're going to let it hang pass just a shade on here just kind of hop off go ahead and nail right here about inch to an inch-and-a-half up on the tar line okay they go ahead and grab two more shingles hold them up here make sure they overlap actually you'll see where the tap was right there where your tabs normally are like right in this area here so you want bring this shingle down to that tap keep it nice and centered over down nail okay now we're getting to the point that we're just about at our line where we want to start our ridge vent so if you're doing this double capping technique you don't want to get too many shingles built up right here where you're going to start out so this next shingle we're just going to single time just like we normally put okay single tab this one where we don't get a whole lot of shingle build up when nail it down on both sides and now we're going to go ahead and lay our first piece of actually you know what I think I'm gonna put one more I won't put one more because I don't want this is going to be to where it starts that and here's a nail head I want to make sure I have something over that I'll head to or anything that can blow under so we'll add one more single now we don't have to worry about then they lives all right now our piece of reg cap and it tells you usually on here like if that you want to start with this end here because the next piece actually lips over on this edge right here so let me go ahead and lay this down here grab my hammer right quick we'll go ahead and nail this first piece of cap off all right and like it on saying this line we want to move it to the point where right there at our line at 14 inches and we want to bring it down on our blue line here and go in top and down okay now we'll go ahead and nail one side completely keep on your blue chalk line all right so we've got that piece there lay out on that side just go ahead and fold the ridge vent over start up here front again hey friends now there's spot put a nail here here here and here we'll go ahead and get that nailed and then we'll show you how to put a few caps on here alright friends now that we've got all our wrist cap nailed down boys start capping it and I would like to say we're gonna dump cabbage three tabs let this first single hang over about a half inch so and go ahead and start nailing put the nail in the same spot I showed you on the other caps there but you will have to handle nail all these then you're ready play there that's really all there is to it alright folks we're going to keep on working here I'll show you what it looks like when it's all done alright friends and neighbors hey we're done with this roof now our ridge cap is totally done as we look down it looks nice and straight I think the customer will be very happy happy so folks I want to thank you for watching the video today don't forget to subscribe and we will see you next time take care and have a great day
