so you've got that brick fireplace with the nice wood mantel and you want to hang up those christmas stockings and they keep falling off with those weighted stocking holders etc and you want some way to hang those here's a great idea for getting a nice solid christmas stocking hung on your mantel but also having it not show up later during the off season so to do this you're going to need to go to your hardware store it's got to be one of those hardware stores with all the drawers that have all those wonderful parts and you're going to look for furniture hardware so what we have here are the furniture inserts these have threads on the inside they have these teeth on the outside here so sp that after you drill the hole you can use this allen wrench to drive this barrel up into the hole so you can attach your hooks the hooks while we bought the westinghouse swag hook kit everybody makes these various hooks but the important part here is you're looking for them to have the threads up here along with this and the reason is is that these screw into the back of the hook so you can insert those into your sleeve and so what you're going to end up with is a hook like this all right and now i'll show you what you want to do okay so what you want to do you can see the first hook there what you want to do is decide how far apart you want them far apart this way we're going with just one brick width because of course on the other side of the our fireplace we've got our actual fireplace we don't want the stockings to go up in flames the other thing is is i've created this piece of paper template here so that i know when i drill the hole i want to be this far back away from the brick i'm also going to be using this same template in front so that i know i'm this far back in from the front now i've already drilled this one and inserted the barrel but let me drill this next one for you so this one is going one brick down from this hole and this much in and the thing you have to do here is you want to make sure when you're drilling the hole before you drill the hole you might have to pan up before you drill the hole you want to make sure that your drill bit isn't deeper than your hearth the mantle excuse me deeper than your mantle you're going to run into problems you're going to want to drill this hole plenty long enough and very straight okay so there we have the hole i take one of my barrels with the threads on it stick it on my allen wrench kind of clean off the surface of the hole so it's neat stick the barrel in there and i'm going to screw the barrel in there with my allen wrench and i want to recess it enough that during the rest of the year you don't see it then you take your hook put the thread into the hook put it into the hole and i'm screwing the hook up there and the reason i'm turning the hook and not the bolt is otherwise you'll actually unscrew the bolt from the hook so let me get another one going here for that hole so you take this your thread put it in there and get it all the way down and then insert it in there being careful to make sure you thread it right and you put it up you can hit the red button so now that we've got all those in there we've got the hooks and we're all set to hang our stockings by the chimney with care here like so you can adjust the hooks i was going to put them all in one direction but you can adjust them so your stockings hang the direction you want to now after christmas and it's time to take them down you just take your stockings off like this then you grab your hooks turn them out like this and if the hook comes off the all thread that's fine you can just take it out get this one for you and if the all thread stays in like this you just use a pair of needle nose pliers to gently get it started coming out and then take it out all the way and i don't have a pair with me so i won't show you that but as you can see then all you have is just a slight hole in the bottom of the mantel where these go and generally speaking unless someone sits right under your mantle the rest of the year they won't even know that you had them there
