Please explain how to make a simple quilted potholder - easy to sew - learn to sew -

hi sewing friends welcome to my sewing room today we're going to make a potholder using a simple nine patch in the middle with a border and on the back of this one i've used some denim fabric it'll make it a little more sturdy for the kitchen so i've made one and i have the ingredients here for the one i'm going to show you how to make i have my two and a half inch squares here to make my nine patch i have a strip of two and a half inch fabric cut the width of fabric for my border i have a backing for the pot holder and i like using old towels because they are inexpensive and i can usually find an old towel to use for the inside of my pot holder so i'm going to sit down at my machine and we're going to start putting this together first i'm going to sew my little two and a half inch squares into rows three rows using a quarter inch seam and since i have lines in one of those fabrics i want the lines to all go the same way i'm using a small stitch length my machine has a number two and that's the one i'm using okay one more row of three and i'll have a nine patch okay great my machine's giving me a little trouble here and not starting exactly right so there i have it i check to make sure it's all correct and then i quickly do this i hold one seam goes that way and one seam goes that way and i kind of put them together so they're meeting in the middle and then i go down the row and same thing i stop and check to see if i got my seams right pull some threads off and add that last piece right here then i walk over to my ironing board and i press my nine patch here it is it's pressed and ready to go i'm going to lay it here on my cutting board and show you that this is going to be my border and i'm not going to do any pre-cutting i'm just gonna sit down at my machine this is the speedy way to make stuff lay that down next to the side nobody's gonna be worried about how exactly together this is it doesn't have to be perfect perfect because it doesn't have to match up with anything we're not making a quilt so i lay that i add a strip here cut it off i only need two more strips and the front of my pot holder will be ready to go you see how i have a little left over here that's because i didn't cut exactly along the line and that's okay try to get it straight all right we did it now i'm gonna go press this up and show you how to layer it together okay here's my pot holder let's see what it measures it measures about 10 inches that's what i thought it would measure and here's my back first i'm going to lay it on my towel you can use this ribbed part here if you want no one's ever going to know there was a little bit of ribbing in there take your ruler and your rotary blade and let's cut around that leaving a little excess just a little bit around the outside all right there we go i've got my two pieces together now i need one more piece here's the back face down i'm going to make a little quilt sandwich i think i'm going to pin this together this will be quilted with a big x first so i'm going to keep my pins away from that imaginary line that i'm going to be quilting on so they're going to be out of the way okay i've got a few pins to hold that together now i'm going to sit at my machine i'm going to give myself a little bit bigger stitch and i'm going to start in the corner and quilt trying to pull away the threads as i go okay we can quilt this just a little bit more if we want i think i will go through these right here yeah i'm just eyeballing it and i think it'll come out just fine let's see i went through that one so i'm going to go through this one and one more line if you are not good at eyeballing you're unsure of yourself take a piece of tape and line it up there with those lines and follow your tape all right it's quilted let's trim we're almost done we just need to trim this off admire it for a minute and then we're going to add binding to our pot holder there we go beautiful all right i have just cut my binding for my pot holder it's a two inch wide piece of fabric cut the width of my fabric and i'm going to sit down on my machine and show you how to put the binding onto your pot holder i'm going to turn it upside down first start in one of the corners and just leave that right there in the corner you see i didn't cut mine with the fabric i'm using a scrap that is about the right size so i had to piece mine you probably won't have to do that though when you get to the corner don't go all the way to the end get to about a quarter of an inch away from the end and turn it pivot it and go sew right off the corner turn lift up your fabric right on that point and fold it across right there start at the top and go down stop sewing a little bit before the end about a quarter of an inch turn it at an angle and sew off the corner lift and fold down make sure that seam is right across the edge of your pot holder there turn sew off the corner lift and fold it down again here is where we we're almost at the end so this is a little tricky i need to get this out of my way so i'm going to fold that open i'm going to start at the top i'm going to sew all the way down and i'm gonna stop right where that seam is actually i'm gonna backstitch a little bit too just two inch two little stitches all right you see what we did there now turn it right side up and i need you to pin i'm going to pin this down right where i started i'm going to pin that over i'm going to fold right to the seam and roll it over to the front and pin see we can do that all the way around roll it over and pin it i put the edge of my fabric right against the seam and then i roll it over and pin okay last side now this is my tail you might want to make a little hook for your pot holder so you fold that over i'm going to pin that right there and this one here's your tail put your two raw edges inside and roll that together let's pin it on this side for right now till we get it started okay i'm not sure how long i want my little hook to be so i'm going to start at the top let's see now i want to be on the front of the pot holder and look at that it came out already that's okay it's a little bit fiddly and we're going to just work with it all right i like to just start i don't like to pin this tail i'd look like to start it on the top there let's see if it works out i'm going to start sewing and i just like to roll as i go roll the edges in it's sort of folded in quarters fourths and i'm going to get over here to my beginning and i'm going to make sure that end is in and i'm catching everything inside yay i got it okay now i'm gonna top stitch all the way around i'm going to fold this down so it's got a nice fold in the corner catch that little corner and turn fold that little corner down i see some strings i do not want hanging out cut those off okay and catch that little corner turn and go all the way around trying to cover up the raw edge there we're almost done okay there is the end of my now if you want a hook on your pot holder this is pretty long you don't want it that long how long do you want it do you want it to go like that do you want it to be flat you get to decide i'm going to cut that off and i think i'm just going to have mine be flat and i'm going to turn the raw edge in just going to smooth that down and i'm going to sew a square kind of a rectangle over that end i'm going to start at the bottom get up to the raw edge and try to keep the raw edge inside my rectangle go down to the bottom and then last but not least i'm going to sew an angle line right up to the corner of my rectangle i'm going to trim a couple threads looks like i got a couple in there and i have a potholder you can someone can leave that flat or they can hang it up with that little hook you put in there there it is
