Please explain how to tune leghold traps and brew a killer lure.

well so and I we're up on the set well I by the central plateau at the moment were packed up in our truck at home at about a thousand meters it's pretty miserable outside ICS afros today on the track lines that still had a ball nonetheless so what we're going to do is take the camera along with us for a day and I'll show you what we do and how we trap and how we use cyanide and give you a few tips along the way some of these things you may know some of them you may not so preparation is key really to being successful so we'll start with our traps and I'll show you how to turn a trap to make sure that it's running optimally when you are out and about in the field all right probably the most basic thing you need to know is how to set your trap pretty straightforward don't use your feet that's hard on the trap use your hands you may not think you may not haven't haven't got enough strength to use your hands while you have so sets traps with no problems at all so it's all about technique so I'll show you how to set a trap I use my knee and I do it as follows so put it on your knee like so face the dog away from you just get your hands on either side I just use the palm of my hands like that push down push the door over like that and then bring this over the dog down and if the pan on it now get your finger see I've lift that up there and have your finger underneath you know why that is because if it goes off you won't catch your fingers and you know black between your nails I haven't got any at the moment which it's not bad so then just lift your pan up for your set now if you have a look at that set it's no good we can see how the pan is up it's not that's not running parallel with the track so just again get your finger and thumb under here under the jaw and just bring it down and the beauty of a Bushmaster is it will almost up for you do you hear that click and there we go that's a properly set track the other trap I like to use seeking and preference after the Bushmaster is the vector and setting is the same so I'll just show you how let's hit a victory so having the pen facing towards you pull the drawers down like that bring the dog over like so and down and then what's and then lift the pan up and you sit now this traps not going to catch anything it looks set looks it quite well actually but watch what happens and this happens with vectors quite a lot whoops I pull that pan down nothing happens see the reason for that is it's not adjusted and tuned properly now quick facts when you're in the field if this happens to your victors it'll never happen to you with a Bushmaster let's just lift that door out of the way and grab your pad and just lift it or push it up like there see like so and then bang she'll-she'll trigger off for you so that's why it's really important to tune your traps properly the other thing see this Bushmaster it's a brand new trap but there's something wrong with it and it's that see the stands moving just for the flick of the fingers that pan should have enough tension on it so it takes about 500 grams to trigger it that way you won't catch rats and you won't catch possums by their toes I'll have to put firm pressure positive pressure on it before all the spring it's going to increase your telly and decrease the number of rats that you catch and it's very easy to accomplish and I'll show you how to do it okay so we want to adjust the pan so it takes at least 500 grams to trigger it what I use is a pair of long nose vice grips Terry those in my field pack and I've got a little screwdriver which does the job really well so describe your nut the earth like so and turn your nut periodically just check the tension on your pants not enough here yet it's a bit right there I think yeah that feels good so until you have done if you've done it a few times get yourself a 500 gram weight set your trap and if it doesn't trigger it that's great and if you get a 600 gram weight on there it does you're about right so there's good positive tension there now so that the straps ready to go because it's a bushmasters the way they're designed is that they hold be tuned beautifully so again you can see that see these little dot there this where your pant sets the sack the pan is nice and level that trap is all ready to go right we'll turn to the victor next the victor is exactly the same just tight in that pan the reason I use vise grips is the nuts sizes are different on the between the victors and unfortunately in the bushmasters so carrying two spinners as a pain so scary appear to vice grips and this screwdriver so you can just tune it by tightening there and I can feel straight away that's great the other thing to do is if it's your traps are getting a bit rusty is get a little bit I use Lennox you don't want to cover your track the Lennox because possums and rats will get out will not rest possums will get out I just put a drop on on the pivot here periodically and on your Springs and you're good to go the other thing to check is your spring tension you'll start to notice after a while that he gets weaker and weaker when it gets too weak possums are going to keep escaping on you so it's time to re spring your trap and another video will show you how to do that so when you set your trap you're on that pan to be dead level like so and that traps just about good to go it can definitely do with a little bit of lubrication in here and I might just push that out a bit more like so and I'm happy with that so the tensions right the sets right it traps good to go so when I set that tomorrow it'll be I have confidence on it okay next we'll go to the kitchen and we'll show you how to make a really good verb okay we've got some lines out there we've been putting out a paste to pre feed our poison pots it's also very effective in conjunction with a blaze when you're trapping as well possums will linger around your trap a lot longer as they chew the lure off the tree will even chew the bark off but they like it they're nice this is a really good brew that I'm making here and one of my favorites you've probably seen my other video where I show you how to make different lures if not have a look at it it's there this is my personal favorite it takes a little bit of heat to make it so the Colerain stick optimize we all know that tonight's going is keeping us warm on the track and we use some of that heat to make our lure so don't go and buy the expensive stuff you see on trade me all these we're going to people try and sell it by the kilo making yourself go to the supermarket get yourself if you're doing quite a bit like we are we just get a big container of majorie I don't know how much that costs so eight or nine eight or nine dollars and get a couple of good dollops of it and chuck it in your pot all right I'll be obviously to melt so we don't need a lot so just a couple of dots in the top view of marjorine okay some cheap peanut butter of one I want brand that has been kicking around in the surf for a while as you can see I like smooth because when you squeeze down at the bottle that's a lot easier so give that a couple of good dollops you want to give the possum for this last meal I've ever had in your life it's the least you can do for them so check that in I'll pretty do one more of those and then you melt that together just a little bit more really spoonful place to have an understanding wife when you're doing this in the kitchen there's nothing toxic here in fact I've been nine and I've been really hungry to eat a bit of lure to keep me getting up the helps right so it's just a matter of stirring that in until it melts okay as you can see a few minutes of elapsed and and that's melted down nicely you've got a nice liquid base there now and then just get a bit of icing sugar this is an unprecedented better a few tablespoons it just gives it a bit of design really more than anything and if you want to put a essences we can do that for the antecedent or whatever just got that all over the floor see was just giving me a funny look I have to sweep it up I'll be in trouble so just stir that in until that's gone okay now again I use the peanut butter lid scoop whatever's at hand you want to thicken this up a little bit but not too much so maybe just just over a heat and a half peanut butter lunch at us and then we stir the Sun with a little bit of oil find the cheapest just find the cheapest or you can the supermarket not motor oil of course I think the possums are like that too much and just Chuck a bit of oil in here now the reason I'm using a margarine base in the oil is then it gets very cold up here below zero and it will freeze solid with the oils white and and the causes of crating fat at the moment and they just love this stuff if you've got a favorite tree at home and you're trapping possums don't put this on it because what they'll do is will chill the back off trying to get at it they like it that much so without insulting your intelligence will just keep heating it and stirring it seconds up should be able to see that okay and then I'll put that into the squeegee bottle that I've got and then we'll be all ready to go in the morning so there you go awesome more and you'll be surprised at how effective it is
