welcome to Hort tube where we talk all things gardening my name is Jim Putnam and this is a pink drift rose this is the low maintenance disease-resistant ground cover pink drift rose my experience with these pink drift roses is they actually seem to grow flatter than almost all the other ones I think you could probably keep this one a foot tall but it will reach a foot and a half or two feet in time if it's not being pruned on and probably three to four feet in width but could be maintained narrower than that like all roses these drift roses are extremely cold hardy they can grow all the way up to zone four and down to zone 11 once established these drift roses can actually put on quite a bit of growth in a single season I probably put on a foot in width each year but not a lot of additional height roses are definitely Sun loving plants these need at least six hours of direct Sun every day and full Sun would be absolutely fine on these there are a lot of different uses for these drift roses they make fantastic foundation plants in front of your other foundation plants I wouldn't use them as the primary plant against the wall but certainly they're fantastic for putting in front of other shrubs and they stay low enough that they're easy to maintain that way they make great container plants they're so cold hardy that that's a great use for them you could put some sort of tall evergreen behind them in the container or other flowering plants that would look fantastic and they're kind of weep over the container in time so that's a great use also mass planted and this one like I say I think we can keep this one lower than the rest of any other rose disease resistant rose like a knockout rose or any other drift rose that you wanted to put behind these would look great of course the primary feature of these roses are the roses and these have just absolutely tons of the single pink flowers on them and this thing is absolutely loaded to bear the flower buds on this one and a lot of these drift roses are like this the bud is one color and the flower is another color these buds are almost red and then the flower opens pink and it's neat to have this two-tone appearance on the same plant so I really like that these will cycle through several flowerings during the summer it'll kind of due into full bloom it'll have a few residual flowers on them in between but for the most part it's an on/off kind of a thing and when they're in full bloom they're really very showy of course it has tremendous disease resistance which is one of the main keys to these and then of course the height we just don't have a lot of shrubs that we can keep below two feet in height so that's just absolutely fantastic for these I've included planting instructions for woody shrubs in the description of this video I don't think you're going to have any problem with these they're pretty tough woody plants it's very easy to bury ground cover plants in mulch when you're mulching so after you mulch make sure you go back and pull the mulch back from the base of this plant and make sure you can see where these stems enter the ground the first year your drift roses are in the ground you're going to want to keep a close eye on watering them you can stick your finger down in the ground a couple inches and check them that way and if they're dry drown the space around them and then let them dry out these are very drought tolerant but if you let them become dry they flower multiple times during the growing season and if they become dry and stressed that will definitely limit the amount of reflowing they're going to do so this is a plant although extremely drought tolerant that I'm probably going to check on even after it's established to make sure that it doesn't become stressed the best time to fertilize these drift roses is while they're still dormant in the late winter before they start to wake up and any kind of slow release fertilizer for roses or for flowering plants would be fine on these just once something that lasts three to four months that way it will run out at midsummer and allow the plant to go dormant naturally in the late summer and early fall like all roses they really need to be pruned in the late winter before they wake up this one was pruned about three inches below where it is now and as a result each of those branches split into multiple side branches and now we have way more flowers than we would have without that pruning in terms of pest on drift roses of course we've talked about the fact they're so disease resistant these leaves are incredibly clean despite being overhead irrigated which you just couldn't do with any kind of old-fashioned rose you can't keep the foliage wet for a prolonged period of time but these just don't seem to mind they do get the same insect problems that other roses get they'll get all kinds of chewing insects and just the whole collection of insects it seems love roses those things can be controlled you know with organic products or non-organic products the other thing that you need to keep in mind with roses is dear absolutely love them so if you have deer issues you wouldn't want to plant these out in the open space where they can get to them because they will eat them to the ground so what are you waiting for even you can grow the low-maintenance disease resistant ground cover pink drift rose thank you for watching my video and if it was helpful please hit the like button and subscribe to my channel for future videos also comment below with any
