today I'm going to show you how to remove glare from glasses in Photoshop you hey guys and welcome to phlearn my name is Aaron NACE and you can find me on phlearn comm where we make learning photoshop & photography fun and today's episode is going to be super helpful for anyone who's taken a portrait of a subject who's got glasses on and let's say you're inside using a studio light you're going to often times see a big reflection oftentimes of a light source in those actual glasses and the biggest trouble is when the reflection is actually covering up part of that person's eye so today we're going to show you how to remove that glare or reflection we're going to jump into the clone stamp dialog where we're going to show you a lot of really great options that you maybe haven't seen before we're going to be able to flip around the actual sample point so we can copy from one side of the glasses over to the other this is going to be an awesome episode it's super simple and it's going to help out whenever you've got glare in some glasses all right so here's our image for today this is a perfect example of a time when you're going to get some glare in glasses we can see this is actually an umbrella reflection right here in these glasses now this is a good case for repairing this because we have a lot of information here on the other side of the glasses and when you're working with glasses because what's behind the glasses are people's eyes that are very very detailed so this is not an area where you can really fudge that much so if you don't have detail on one of the eyes to replace it for the other eye this is going to be very difficult to do so if you're about to do this technique make sure that at least one of the eyes is clear and free of a reflection okay so what we're going to do let's create a new layer here and I'm going to hit s for my clone stamp tool so we're going to go to our clone stamp now make sure to start off we're going to start off with our opacity at 100 and our flow at 100 we're going to click our sample to e current and below and that's going to allow me to do this on this new layer okay now just a regular quick tip on how the clone stamp works basically with the clone stamp tool you can sample an area by holding alt or option let's say I sample this area and then I'm going to click over here and start painting away and basically I'm duplicating whatever I paint whatever I sample in the area that I'm painting okay now because I want a new layer here I could use the move tool and I can move this around see if I move it right back there it's exact a copy of what that is so that's a quick intro to the clone stamp tool in general okay now we're going to zoom out just a little bit so I can see what I'm doing a little bit better but with the clone stamp tool this time instead of just doing a direct sample because this the area that I need to replace what we're going to do is I'm going to go to window and then down here to clone source okay now the clone source dialog is really great because it allows us to actually control a lot of what's going on here within the clone stamp tool now to start off we actually want to sample this area over here and replace this area because it makes sense right this is the outside of classes with the outside the classes to a farm sampling over here and I start painting over here obviously this isn't exactly going to work I mean you could flip the layer around and manipulate it and things like that but off the bat this is not going to work so the first thing I want to do is I want to turn on this show overlay now show overlay is going to allow me to sample a point here and then it's going to actually show what's going to wind up painting so I have a really nice preview of what its going to actually look like this is super helpful whenever you're going to be doing detailed clone stamp work so show overlay you can turn that off or on if we're going to leave it on for this episode now we can do all these other cool options here like our width and our height now you can change the percentage of these you can change your width stretch it out and your height and stretch that out which I really wouldn't suggest this doesn't really help out so much like stretching out our width you can see basically it's just making it a lot larger in place we've got those linked together but if we were to stretch you know our width and our height out to different dimensions it would start putting this in at different dimension so you can see how it's all squished now that sort of thing is not really that helpful let's go ahead and lock these back in and we're going to be putting that at 100% okay so sample distant and we're back to a normal clone stamp tool it's not all stretch now what I am interested in this case is this little flip of the width right here basically it's going to flip my sample horizontally so we're going to click that and now if I sample over here let's say I'm painting over there you're going to see it's actually going to flip it back the other way where I'm painting which is exactly what we need because I want to sample this area and I want to paint it in over here so let's go ahead and start that I'm going to hold alt or option to sample this area here okay and we're going to zoom in there we go and now I can start painting in this area so I'm painting in this area it's sampling from the left side and flipping it around at the exact same time so basically we're painting in what would be on the left we're painting this in on the right hand side okay now it's not going to be perfect this is image is not obviously perfectly symmetrical so we're got you know we are going to run into some places like this where it's just not really going to work so what we're going to do but that's off to a pretty good start we're going to go ahead and clear that down there in just a little bit next time what I need to do is focus on this part of the eye so what we're going to do is I'm going to sample this part of the eye from this image okay from that side rather and then we're just going to start painting in right over here so we're lit quite literally just replacing this area of this eye there we go with the detail from the other eye now you can see I accidentally copied some of the glasses and so we're just going to hit undo there we go I'm going to make sure not to go all the way up there we go alright so we're looking really good so far now I just need a little bit more detail we're going to sample right over here alright and I'm going to paint it in right over here to see what we can do all right there we go all right that looks pretty good now we're almost there we do have a couple areas but we can see we've taken care of the majority of the glare which is what I would suggest doing take care of the bulk of it and then you can go in and fine tune some of the details so let's go ahead and zoom in here now this area let's make this visible in the not visible you can see some of this area we don't actually need to be clone stamped right like in this area here so we're just going to put a layer mask on this layer and it'd be for the brush tool and just like a regular layer mask what we're going to do is I'm going to just paint black right here on the layer mask and that's just going to make it go away just in that area there we go so now we're blending in a little bit better all right that looks pretty good now this area here I've got a little bit more glasses that actually duplicated too much so we're just going to put a new layer above there and now we're going to clone stamp there we go we're going to clone stamp from below right up above : stamp this time let's make sure to turn this off I'm going to turn off my flip the width and the height so we're going to sample right here and then simply paint right up above here there we go and we should have a really nice preview of what it's actually going to look like all right there we go which is going to help if I want to make this actually look realistic which I do alright now this is going to be relatively I would say this is not going to be the easiest thing you will ever do in Photoshop and the reason is because we have to basically repair all this fine detail and it's around an eye which you know there's a lot of detail already in the eye and kind of like you know building it back up from scratch is not incredibly simple so having this other eye to start with is really really nice alright so now we want to clean it up just a little bit more and make all the transitions nice and smooth so we're going to create a new layer and then I'm going to use the clone stamp tool again we're going to have this show overlay on we're going to choose a larger brush now and instead of painting at an opacity of a hundred percent what we're going to do is hit v to change my opacity down to 50% and this way I can sample areas and I can paint in and this is just going to allow me to kind of blend in these different areas of my image so instead of having it be a little bit more blotchy we're just blending these areas right in with each other there we go and it's going to allow the smooth the skin to look a lot more smooth in the clone stamp work to be a lot more smooth as well all right there we're almost done we're just going to bring that in alright let's turn that off and on we can see let's zoom out a little bit so we can see that smooths it up a little bit and gives us a little bit more of a clear line there so this would be like there the shadow of the glasses alright that looks pretty awesome let's go ahead and take a look at the before and the after here's our before you can see the glare very clearly and here's the after looks as if there was no glare to start with alright guys that's it for today's episode this should help out a ton when you need to remove that glare just remember the key areas to look for with that clone source dialog such as the show overlay in the flip horizontal those are going to really help out actually let you clone stamp one eye and replace the other eye if you guys
