hi this is Patrick with advanced staircase today we're going to show you a basic installation of a box Newell and a knee wall normally the knee wall will come past the first step out here in it would be notching the box they took a lot of times about half way to push the knee wall that I put to push the box a little back on the knee wall in this particular situation they had it knocked for the old post so where you we opened it up so we can put our box a little flush to the front of the knee wall this is the knee wall if you're not sure what I mean by that term the slanted board it goes along top of the trends here so we already cleaned up our notch here when you're putting in a box the hole the first thing you need to do is get it in the position where it's going to sit front to back because we have to get our proper height for our boxing so again if the neat wall came out further you would kind of set it behind here approximately let's say that it was going halfway on your knee wall and that's where it would be placed front to back and you would do your measurements with it sitting here then after you got the right height you'd go back and notch it so we're going to put piece of the handrail on top of our nail wall and measure to the top of the handrail from the nose of the stair tread in this particular situation it's right at five and a half inches and when it's installed we need it to sit from the nose of the stair tread between 34 to 36 inches of course check your local codes but most places the height of the handrail from the nose of the tread is 34 and 36 inches we're going to put it at 35 inches just to give us some room for error and something if we're if we wanted 35 and we're at five and a half we're going to have to go up twenty nine and a half more inches so what's gonna do now just put a mark right where the top of our handrail it's the the Box alone right now you may not be able to see that but you can see what I did we again knew all the rails at the top of them you all put a mark right there we're going to measure up from my mark twenty nine and a half inches okay when we cut our handrail to go on the box though we're going to be cutting it up on this angle and when we cut our angle it's going to be approximately three inches from top to bottom we're going to want that to sit in the middle of our that where it's going to hit the box Knoll and that's six inches so we're going to want in this particular case in inch and a half from the top that will give us an inch and a half to the bottom so that will place it evenly in the middle bar box and so we have our mark where our rail would be hitting right now twenty nine and a half inches and we needed it to bring up there so we're going to be cutting off 8 and 1/2 inches to bring this down this mark down to this lovely okay we cut the box level and come back okay we've cut our box tool and going to make another mark where our rail is coming right now the top of the rail again there's our mark measure up to our from our top of a rail now the birds going to go twenty nine and a half inches so twenty nine and a half plus the five and a half here will be 35 inches for a 35 inch rail height okay next I'm going to show you a little bit about the mounting if we were notching the box bull again when I talked about here if we were going to notch it for to sit halfway on here we make our mark where we're going to notch it cut this piece out of the box no and then put it appropriate amount of this block up against here for it to sit on also just not this particular case how we're going to mount it in this situation we're going to put the whole box no here again most of them with the new all you're going to be notching it you're going to be cutting your mouth you block probably in half mounting it up against your knee wall and then bringing it in that direction in this situation what we're going to do since we're going to full box though the monkey block is going to slide in then what it stops leave about an eighth inch from the top market words can become never line and cut the block and then the extra if we cut off the bottom of our box no we cut up approximately a one-inch piece of it so what we're going to do is mark where that's going okay and we have a market where we're going to mark our block for the boxing okay we're going to cut this comeback mount it and then show you down install ok we're going to start by putting some adhesive or the mounting block is going to go and you don't need too much down here because it's going to push most of it out when you screw your block down a little bit it adhesive there definitely prefer this is called peel premium it's much stronger than liquid nails or pretty much anything out there don't Dorse a lot of brands but PL premium will hold better than anything on the world ok I'm going to take this kind of spacing block here so we get our post nice and tight up against the new wall and then we're going to shoot a couple of nails before we put our screws in there so the nails will hold it in place where we need to be until we screw the block in okay and it is a little bit stuck but we want to cut up against the meatball okay now we're going to we know they're blocking place its hold it from moving around we're going to take some heavy-duty screws he's use an impact and drop a minute make sure they go in pass the flush part so the box level is a hang-up on it while you're trying to put it on now we're going to put peel premium on the inside of the box little make sure you get all four sides the nice thing about this also is it expands as it sets up so it will fill in gaps and it will be rock solid okay we have all four sides with PL premium in here we're going to put a little bit on the knee wall and just on the inside lip here just to get a really strong bond so this whole piece is rocks out okay now we're going to slide our box little down it's a nice tight fit piece of trim here just okay nice tie fit we're going to get a level square it all up shoot a couple nails to hold it in place until it sets takes about 24 to 48 hours to fully set up okay we're going to make sure our post is level both directions good that way all right now we're going to put a couple nails okay we're going to get an initial angle on our handrail to cut it so we're sitting on top of the new wall just get put a little mark they'll be an approximate angle they're usually near a forty degrees so that's a good starting point again it's just an initial cut all right we already have this end cut we already did that and see when we bring it in it's it's there pretty close fit to our to our angle good starting point okay we clamped in its spacer block here to hold our rail up at the proper height and we worked on our angle to the guide perfect here okay we're at a actually a 39 degree angle it's going to be different with every staircase so but in general all if it's 39 here we'll also be up at the top so we have that part set okay we have a four-foot level and on our level we marked our 34 our 36 inch mix you have three months 34 35 and 36 we're shooting for right in the middle we're ready check their bottom or right at 35 inches we put the level at the front of the nose of the stair tread and we're going to put this level right there we're right at our 35 inches there so our rail is edits right at the right height and it's consistent okay we want to take a rosette this happens to be a square rosette goes well with a with the box no I'm going to put on our wall so it's nice and flush we actually have it up your backwards put a little mark top and bottom that's where we need to cut it so the real Zeppelin fit in there and okay we have our rail or cut we did have to cut an angle on the top piece here because the wall is on quite a bit of an angle so we'll take a little time to get all your angles right but go a little bit at a time we mark to our rosettes going to sit height wise now we're going install everything we're going to put up again use a little bit of peel premium you don't need a large amount Center it in the mall put a nail where the rails going to cover up this holes you have to fill make sure you're nice and straight so put one in straighten it up okay a couple more okay now we'll do the red okay we're just going to put a small amount white glue spread it out on both ends in the rail good nail it first and I will come back and and put a screw in there just to give it some extra strength measure make sure even on both sides make sure the centered up here okay get a good wood good quality wood filler usually if you go to a hardwood flooring Supply Company they'll have a better wood filler and you'll get it at Lowe's or Home Depot kind of place and go back although where we shot nail holes just go back and this is a red oak so we have a red oak wood filler push it in there and you don't have to get crazy just make sure it's flush and fill it all your holes then we'll come back and give it a lights and that's it
