The 1964 United States presidential election was the 45th quadrennial presidential election. Incumbent Democratic United States President Lyndon B. Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater, the Republican nominee. Johnson took office on November 22, 1963, following the assassination of his predecessor, John F. Kennedy.
