it's carleen again with another video for my friends at allfreechristmascrafts.com today we're going to be making a christmas brooch so the supplies that you'll be needing are some mod podge a paint brush you're going to be needing a strip of about 6 by 24 inches of velvet fabric now i'm recycling this fabric from a blouse that i got at my local thrift store the next thing that you're going to be needing is a multi-purpose craft scissors a pin back for your brooch one of these circular pearl stems you're going to be needing about a yard of holiday ribbon and this one actually happens to be about four inches wide you're going to be needing about six inches of bendable wire you're also going to be needing some glittery tulle and this one happens to be green you're also going to be needing this die by tim holtz and it's called tattered florals your die cutting machine and your hot glue gun so let's get started so the first thing that you want to do is you want to take your mod podge and your paint brush this fabric is actually very soft i want the flower to hold its shape so you can use different things to stiffen up your fabric like fabric stiffener you can also use some interfacing and just iron that on the back but um if you're going to mod podget i would mod podge the back and then i let this dry overnight and then you're going to cut out four of these big flowers from the tim holtz tattered florals die and you can see how pliable that makes this fabric and it totally changes the texture of it so what we're going to do is we're going to make a 3d rose with this so the first thing that i'm going to do is i'm going to take one of these and i actually have four and i'm going to on the first one i'm actually just going to cut straight into the middle and that's going to give me a nice slit just like that we're going to take your glue gun and then just put glue right on one of the petals to the left or the right and then you're just going to cross it over and adhere it now tim holtz did this technique before he had the tattered florals die so this is his original idea and then you just take one of the other flowers and i'm going to put some glue in the middle and just place this one on top of here and i'm going to be mindful of intersecting the petals so it looks like that okay so for the next one i am going to just cut off one of the petals here and i'm going to put some glue adhere the petals and then cut off a little bit of the bottom so that it's not too bulky and then put some glue around that circle and then place it down and again be mindful of where the petals are intersecting okay and then you're going to do the same thing the next one you're going to cut two petals off adhere them together i already have one done don't forget to cut the bottom and then adhere this into your flower and now i have one flower that just has two petals so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna trim this bottom edge off first and i'm just gonna start rolling this into a circle you're going to come out with something like this and you want to adhere the sides so that it sticks to each other and keeps that form so you have something like that and i'm actually still going to cut off a little bit more so that this rosebud will fit into the middle there so let's put some hot glue on the bottom and place that right in the center and then you can adjust your petals as you like so that is what my flower came out like now the next thing you want to do is you want to take your pearl strand and i'm going to cut some of the wire most of the wire off so that i just have this small piece and i'm going to actually position this behind my flower and i'm going to place a line of glue on the back and then position my pearls right on top of that glue so the next thing you want to do is we're going to take this glitter green tool and fold it in half and i'm going to actually then cut that in half and i'm going to cut out the shape of some leaves now if you don't have green tool you can also use felt or fabric for this part and then i'm gonna just put a line of glue and then gather this up now i didn't put a very thick line because i don't want to burn my fingers so you just gather that up and you get a little bit more dimension to your leaf so we're going to do the same with the remaining tool so now you want to place your leaves about where you want them so i'm thinking i would put them down like that so this would be the top and these will be the bottom of my flower you can also put leaves on both sides if you want so i'm gonna again put a line of glue turn my leaf right side up and then just hold it in place until the glue dries now if you don't want to use your hot glue gun for this you can also use your fabric glue and you'll just have to hold it in place a little bit longer so that is what my flower looks like now we need to work on the bow so for the bow you're going to be needing your holiday ribbon and this happens to be extra wide so what i'm going to do is just go ahead and fold it into thirds just like that and you can use a little bit of fabric glue or hot glue to tack it into place so i'm going to leave probably about a six inch tail and i'm going to spread my fingers make them as wide as i can and then wrap the bowl around my hand and i'm going to wrap this around about two times and just make sure that you're ending on the opposite side so i actually have a lot left over but it's okay we can trim that off and then i'm gonna just kind of gather this in the middle here and take my wire loop it around and you really want to twist your wire as tight as possible on the back of your bow and then you can cut off any excess and then just bend that wire down so that you don't cut yourself and then we're going to work on the tails so you want the tails to be about the same length on both sides and i'm going to pull that one down and then take this one and cut at an angle okay so if you hold the two tails you should be able to manipulate this a little bit easier and you're just gonna spread these loops out and just continue to play with it until you have it how you want it i'm going to trim this a little bit shorter so next you want to just come back with your flower you're going to hot glue this in place over the top here and i'm going to place the glue on the back of my flower and then make sure the pearls are at the top and glue it in the center and i actually have a second one done as well and i have it with a smaller flower so i'm going to go ahead and glue this one on here and there's that one last thing to do is to take your pin backing and i'm going to open this up and then turn this over place the glue on the back of your pin and then go ahead and hot glue that down and there are your two brooches i hope you like this project and for more project ideas please visit my friends at allfreechristmascrafts.com thanks for watching and i'll see you next time
