Please explain how to harvest lobelia

Hey guys this is Josh with Trillium: Wild Edibles and I'm sitting inside my house and I'm getting ready to go harvest some Lobelia. Then get it inside, clean it up, and then I'm going to get it inside the drybox, so stay tuned. Hey guys welcome back. So what you see here I've got some things laid out and these are some things that are going to make harvesting Lobelia just a little bit easier. So let's go over some of the things we got here. First thing you're going to need, is some scissors and a bag. Scissors are to cut the stem of Lobelia at it's base. That way we don't track a bunch of dirt inside the house. We got the bag that we can put it in. Once you get it inside you're going to need a strainer, that way you can rinse it off. You're going to need a couple plates. You're going to need a couple plates, and you're going to need some paper towels. We'll get into a little bit more of this, whenever we get the Lobelia inside. Obviously before you harvest Lobelia you have to have it properly identified. So if you haven't already learned how to identify Lobelia, I'll put the link in the description below and you can watch my video on how to identify Lobelia Alright, so now that we've got that out of the way, Let's go outside and harvest some Lobelia. Alright so now that you've got your bag and your scissors, You're ready to harvest Lobelia. Now the important thing to keep in mind so we don't track dirt inside the house, is we want to cut this plant at the base right here. Once we cut the plant, put it inside of our bag. And we go to the next one Okay so now that we have our Lobelia, let's go inside get it cleaned up and put it into the drybox. Okay os I'm back inside and I've got my Lobelia I'm ready to wash it off bu before I can I've got to prepare these plates with some paer towels. That way we can dry it really easy. Now I'm going to get two more ready. To go on top. Okay, now that we've got that let's go rinse off our Lobelia Okay so we got our Lobleia and we're here at the sink. First thing we need to do is to separate the plants and pick off the bad leaves. Pick those off and set those aside, we don't need them. Those are all the bad ones I'm going to pick off of this plant. Go to the next one. We'll pick all the nasty looking leaves off of it. Okay. We got our leaves picked off of our Lobelia. Now next thing to do is we need to take our Lobelia and cut them in half. Whenever we do so we need to be careful not to cut any other leaves. We want to go underneath the leaves When we cut I'm going to make sure I've got both sides. Cutting them in half will make them easier to rinse off And we can eliminate this section here. Just by cutting that off directly into it, Thankfully I cleaned the sink before doing this. So no worries there. Then we've got our Lobelia, we get our sink turned on cold water, rather gently, we just give it a good rinse that's all it needs. So we shake it out Help remove a lot of the moisture by shaking it. Then we go back to the table. Okay so now that we've rinsed off the Lobelia, What you want to do, is you want to set it on these towels. And if it doesn't fit, you may have to take your scissors and cut them in half again. I'm just going to set these on here diagonally, like that. And I can actually get all of this on this one plate, I don't need this other plate. So we'll scratch that that's okay. I figured they were a little taller than they turned out to be. I'll just pat them dry. We want to make sure they are fully dry, so remove all of the moisture. Since I already had these other paper towels and plate, I'm going to just use it by transferring These to fresh dried paper towels. Very quickly here. Like that. Then we'll pat them again. So we're going to let these finish drying up here. We're going to let them sit here for a few minutes, probably about five to ten minutes is all it'll take Then after that we're going to put them into the drybox. Okay so now that you're Lobelia's dry, let's go ahead and put it into the drybox. My drybox is actually just a plastic food dehydrator. I don't plug this in I just use the racks that are spaced out and I put it inside my closet. It works for me, I make sure there's plenty of ventilation in there, and I make sure that it, Flows well and it's not too humid. Now what we want to do is get the top off our drybox. In here I've already got some Lobelia drying. It's actually fully dried, I'm going to take that, all of it Im going to take all of it in it's dried form and put it into the jar. I'm going to try to be kind of careful but not too careful because I need it all to fit. So now that we've got our Lobelia in a jar, get the flowers and everything in there and then put the lid on. Now you have a jar of Lobelia herb ready to use. At this point we want to take the rest of our Lobelia And we want to rip it in half so it'll fit on our trays here. Or you can cut it with your scissors, I didn't bring mine to the table with me. You may also notice there's some other stuff in here. I actually have some Mullein leaves and Flowers drying up. There coming along nicely. But we're going to take our Lobelia and we're just going to put it right back on top where it was. Put the lid on our box, and we're done.
