hello YouTube and fellow our viewers are you thinking of towing double well this is how you do it so we are here in Michigan and Michigan requires you to have an endorsement on your license it's an r4 double recreational towing for me that meant going to the Secretary of State's taking a short test and paying $19 to renew my license with the recreational endorsement on it now if you do have a commercial operator's license allowing you to tow double currently you're also allowed to tow recreational doubles to tow recreational double you need to make sure you have the right equipment first of all your truck has to be rated to do it with this setup we're about eighteen thousand pounds which is well within the right weight ratings of our truck also your second trailer has to be lighter than the empty weight of the truck and the empty weight of the fifth-wheel trailer now you have to tow it with a fifth wheel you cannot tow a bumper pull trailer behind a bumper pull trailer and that's because bumper pull trailers tow in such a way that could cause an unsafe condition and an accident here in Michigan we're limited to 75 feet total length from the front of the truck to the end of your second trailer another thing you need to consider when towing your second trailer is the connection is a little bit different your chains safety chains have to be hooked to the very outer edges of your fifth wheel frame also you're going to have to wire in your brake lights into your existing fifth wheel lights or all the way up to the front also be sure that your fifth wheel electric brakes are working in proper order before setting off in this journey driving with a second trailer behind your fifth wheel is a little bit more difficult you're heavier so you take longer to accelerate and longer to stop also turning is more difficult because your second trailer off tracks further than your fifth wheel even so when you're making a turn especially a right-hand turn there's a much higher probability that you're going to run over the curb so you have to make even wider turns than towing just your fifth wheel you also have to consider how long you are making lane changes can be very difficult with towing double because it's extremely hard to see the second trailer if not impossible hi and your fifth-wheel to remedy this we added a backup camera in the window of our fifth wheel check out our other video on how to do that inexpensively we're in Michigan and it allows towing double but a lot of states do as well but be sure to check the state's rules and regulations that you're in to make sure that you comply lastly have fun with it but remember that your very heavy and very long and it's still pretty dangerous to do so follow all these safety rules and requirements so that you don't cause an accident and ruin your day or even life thanks for watching I'm Tom my wife and I are the Mortons on the move we travel full-time in our fifth wheel around the country be sure to check out our other videos on YouTube for more tips tricks and information about our travels you
