Please explain how to build a fortress in minecraft!

hello everyone this is mumbo and welcome back to another minecraft video in this one i'm going to be showing you guys how to build a fortress now this thing is going to be filled to the brim with various different redstone contraptions most of them are going to be defense systems and things to keep the bad guys out and some of them are just there to look awesome which i think is incredibly important all in all i think it should be a really interesting redstone project and if you do want to build along with me then of course this world can be found down in the description just chuck it into a minecraft world saves folder and place the blocks as i place them but anyway let's crack on and get this thing started so first things first we've got to build the entrance for this place and i think the best entrance for any form of fortress is to use a castle entrance also known as a port callus so the first thing we've got to do is get this sheep out of the way and we've got to create a 4x3 area using these stone bricks right here now of course you can decorate this however you really want to but i'm just going to show you the basics and all the redstone contraptions you want to go four blocks up like this and you want to go four blocks across like that and then another four blocks on that side to create a four by three area in the center and then we're going to go one block back from this area right here and we're going to take out all of these blocks now as you can see i've mined out a small area down underneath and that's just so that we can chuck in at the sticky pistons just like that then we need some regular pistons on top of those and then sand blocks going right the way up to the surface on top of all of those as well and that's what's going to be pushing up all of our fence posts then you want to chuck in all of the fence posts just like this filling up the entire area just like that and then on top of those you want to place your regular pistons you want to have one regular piston up here and one regular piston just down underneath it just like that leaving a two block space in between them and then you can fill in all of those right the way across your door so now what i've done is i've cleared out a slightly larger area so we have plenty of space to play with here this right here is a 7x5 area we aren't going to use all of the blocks available but it just gives us room to maneuver around so what we want to do is chuck a block out like this and then we're going to have a button right here now this is going to be the input to open up our castle gate just down underneath that we're going to chuck in a sticky piston with a redstone block on his face and that is going to run down into this redstone right here so when we hit that button this sticky piston will extend it will power this redstone that will run out into this repeater right here which will go into this sticky piston facing upwards with a block on top which will then run out into this repeater set to three ticks another repeater set to three ticks which is going to be going into this block right here then next to all of these you just want to place in some redstone and some repeaters running into all of these pistons down at the bottom and then up at the top we're going to chuck down a redstone torch a block another redstone torch and then these are going to be the repeaters that run it into our top pistons you just want to have redstone in like this and once again repeaters are running into all of those blocks so that will be the extension fully completed next up we've got to do the top half of the door because obviously at the minute it's just opening and it will never actually close after that so what we have to do is run a repeater out from this block right here and run it into this block right here then underneath this block we're going to chuck down a block like this with a redstone dot right there and on the side of this block we're actually going to add ourselves a button and this is the alternate inputs this is the input to the door from the inside so that we can actually get out of this place because otherwise we're probably going to struggle quite a bit but anyway on the side of this block you also want to track down a redstone torch like that a block like this some redstone dust right there block up like that another redstone torch a block on top of that redstone torch with another redstone torch a block on top of that torch with a dropper facing upwards and a hopper running down into that dropper right there to create a monostable circuit we're going to chuck a button into that dropper although it can be any item you really like and then we're going to run our comparator out from that block into this block right here with redstone dust on top and a repeater running into this block right here now this is of course going to be powering all of our pistons you just want to chuck in a bunch of blocks just like this but actually you want to make sure that this block right here is in fact an upside down half slab to allow the redstone to run down between both of these you want to run redstone across like this and repeaters running into all of these pistons and you want to go down underneath here and once again we're going to be chucking in a layer of blocks just like that with a block up like this so the redstone can be connected i'm going to go right away across here redstone dust on top of all of these blocks and then repeaters it sets you three ticks just down underneath it like that and that is everything done and dusted there is just one very quick change that you need to make to your circuitry before you fire this thing into action and that is to change this repeater right here from three ticks to four ticks i apologize for that mistake but that will allow all of the sound blocks to be retracted and that means that this thing is now fully functional so if you hit this button you can see all of our fence posts get pushed upwards we can walk through the door and then not all of the fence posts get pushed back down behind us to stop any creepers or bad guys from getting inside now the way this thing works is actually quite simple we have a rising edge monostable circuit right here which triggers all of this double extender circuitry and these are really simple double extenders because of course sound blocks fall due to gravity so we don't have to worry about second block retraction and then on the falling edge we've got this falling edge monostable circuit up here which fires into action this double extender which is even simpler because we don't even have to retract these pistons right here as they get automatically pushed back up when the fence posts get pushed back up as well it's very simple stuff now as you guys know i'm not the best builder in the world but i've decided to add in a few extra blocks right here for decoration so we've got some cobblestone stairs going across the top and we have some stone bricks wrapping around the outside now most of your redstone circuitry is actually covered up but we have a little bit exposed at the top here which i actually think looks quite nice i mean i'm fairly happy with it being there let me know down in the comment section what you think but anyway we're going to be moving on to the next part which is adding in the extra bits on the outside so first things first you want to chuck in a few stone bricks next to your fence post right here just going up to those pistons and that should complete the look of your castle door then we are going to create this sort of section right here so we're going to go up to this height and we're going to create a big elongated o a bit like this one and we're going to chuck in a dispenser at the bottom a dispenser at the top and then some cobblestone stairs in the middle once again all of these blocks they're entirely optional but this system right here is the important part and i'm going to do the same thing on the other side once you have something like this going on we're going to start linking up all of the redstone and i'm going to warn you things are going to start getting really quite tight here so you want to place a block up like this and a block up like that with redstone dust on top of both of those now the good news is this redstone right here doesn't power this redstone so neither of these circuits despite the fact that they're next to one another will power one another which is always a very good thing indeed so you want to chuck in an upside down half slab right there and redstone dust like that and that will power both of those dispensers then you want to head over here and do the same thing on the other side just like that so that is two blocks like this redstone on those and then upside down half side with the redstone running into the dispensers and now it's time to start linking this thing up so the first thing you want to do is go down like this place a block next to your button and then a redstone torch right there then we're going to grab another block place a redstone torch on the side of that one and another block down on the bottom with a redstone torch on the side of that one you want to do the same thing on the other side so block out like this redstone torch right there a block like this redstone torch right there and a block like this with a redstone torch right there and if you're wondering why i'm using spruce wood that's simply because that's going to be the flooring for the inside of my fortress and i thought i'd do that before placing in the redstone and then having to take it out and replace it with a spruce wood it's just it's time saving anyway you want to place a couple blocks going across the bottom like this and we're going to place a repeater and then a comparator with redstone dust right there and then a comparator over here with redstone dust and then a repeater right here in the center here we're going to be chucking in our hopper clock all we have to do for that one is chuck a hopper in like this and a hopper running back into it so it looks just a little bit like this one then you want to chuck an item inside that hopper right here and as you can see we start getting at the clicking of the dispensers and also the redstone running through both sets just like that then to turn this thing off what we have to do is place a couple blocks like this and leave it like that and if you flick it on as you can see the entire system shuts off and one thing that i would suggest doing is chucking down a sign and actually writing turrets so it tells you what that lever does that is the toggle for your turret and that is what is going to allow you to start firing out the arrows from the front so now the only job that you have to do is to fill up these dispensers here with arrows and then you will have perfectly good weaponry to take on all of the mobs on the outside of your base next up we are going to be working on our mob turrets now of course if you're on a multiplayer world these things are going to be absolutely fantastic because these are going to protect your fortress from other players however if you're in single player they're not going to be particularly useful but they're still going to look fairly awesome so you might still want to build them but anyway decoration wise we're going to be having two cobblestone stairs like that and then a few stone bricks going across like this with stone slabs on top of all of these and of course you don't have to do exactly the same design as i'm doing right here but i personally think this looks pretty cool so we're going to create the big o shape going up to the top there with some cobblestone stairs down at the bottom cobblestone stairs up at the top and then some cobblestone in the middle then you want to head up to the top here chuck in a few blocks of cobblestone and then a few stone bricks like that and this is what you should end up with i mean it's not the best looking building in the world but it's certainly not the worst so we're going to head underneath and we're actually going to make this thing functional so you want to chuck in a regular piston just underneath your stone slabs right there and that is going to be pulling our mob through that block and up onto the surface so that you can take on all of the other plates you want to chuck in a few glass blocks like this obviously these can be regular blocks but i like the look of the glass and then we want a slime block down here with a sticky piston facing across like this into our regular piston there so while these things up is relatively simple you want to go three blocks beneath that sticky piston place a block a redstone torch another block and then another redstone torch which will send a one tick pulse through that sticky piston then you want to place a redstone torch right here a block like this a dropper facing upwards there with a hopper running back down into it and then you want to chuck any old item inside that dropper to create a monostable circuit then you want to place a block right here a block right there with a comparator running out from that hopper a repeater sets a two ticks running into that block which will power this regular piston now for the difficult part if you're playing in survival mode this bit is going to be a massive pen in the backside you need to get yourself a witch or a skeleton or whatever mobs you want to place inside this turret and you need to get it inside this area here without it dying or without you dying as well so you need to chuck that thing in and then make sure that you've got the blocks to fill up the area because otherwise that guy right there is going to escape one thing that is incredibly important is you need to rename these guys because otherwise it's going to despawn as soon as you unload those chunks so i've called this guy skelly turret you can of course call your mob whatever you really fancy anyway it is now time to crack on with the other side of the fortress and as you can see already i've done all the decoration it's an exact mirror of the other half so now we're going to chuck in all of the blocks it's exactly the same process as last time we want to place in a regular piston facing downwards a sticky piston facing across it just like that then we need to create a little chamber for our mobs you want to place our glass like this a slime block down at the bottom right there and then we're going to grab ourselves a few blocks and do all of the wiring so you want to go three blocks beneath the sticky piston place in a torch and then a block and then another redstone torch a redstone torch right there with a block up like this a dropper facing upwards with a hopper running back down into that dropper to create a monostable circuit you want to throw any old item inside that thing then you want to place two blocks out like this a comparator and then a repeater set to two ticks running into that block so that is all of the redstone wiring completed you just need to throw the skeleton or whatever mob you're choosing inside that chamber right there and make sure to rename it so while these things up as you can see i've cleared out a slightly larger area out the back of the fortress and what we're going to do is run three blocks out like this then a bunch of blocks going all the way across right the way over to the other side and then you want to place redstone dust on top of all of these blocks so redstone going all the way across here until you come in line with the comparator then you want to place redstone going all the way across like this and then on top of these blocks you just want to place box up like this redstone on top of both of those a redstone torch on that side and a redstone torch on this side as well and that will actually activate our mob turrets so now our skeleton should be up on the surface as you can see right there but then what we want to do is head over into this area we're going to grab a few of these blocks right here and we're going to chuck a couple blocks down like this a lever right here and we're going to need another sign telling us what this thing does so this is going to be our skelly turrets now all of the defensive redstone is all done and dusted we've got ourselves some arrow turrets and we also have ourselves some skeleton turrets on the outside as well now this is all well and good but what we need to do is we need to actually finish off the fortress because of course at the minute we have got one half of it but if any player was walking along they could easily walk around the back and attack us so what i'm going to do here is i'm going to copy what i've done for the first half of this design so all of these blocks right here i'm going to copy all of them and i'm going to do them on the other side and it should in theory end up looking pretty good here it is this is the finished product as i've said many times in the history of my youtube channel not the best builder in all of minecraft but i have to say i actually think this thing looks pretty cool i mean it's got some nice lines it's a nice semi-circular shape which is always pretty cool and we have all of the cobblestone and the the nice dispenser detailing and things i think it looks okay obviously none of this stuff is actually functional you could make it functional if you really wanted to that would be pretty awesome but now we're going to head inside and we're going to start work on decorating the interior of this thing and i think the first thing i'm going to do is chuck in our spruce wood flooring to give us a grounding for all of the future redstone contraptions the last contraption that i want to work on isn't something particularly insane it's just something that i think would be pretty cool inside this little fortress right here and that is a translocation piston elevator so we're going to chuck in a regular piston right like this we're going to chuck a block in like that with a stone button on the side of it a redstone torch right there a block on top of that redstone torch and then another redstone torch right here with a block on top of that one and if we press this button as you can see our piston will extend and that will pull us through that block so what we're going to do now is we're going to create a little platform which is where we're going to be standing i'm going to chuck in all these blocks but the way that we're going to get down is using this sticky piston right here so i'm going to chuck in at the remaining blocks right there and then for that sticky piston to work what we want to do is chuck a block in like this a redstone torch right there and a button on top of that one and as you can see when we hit this button that sticky piston will retract our piston allowing us to drop down beneath and go on to the next level so now we can chuck in all of the fences and this can be like a little balcony on the inside of the fortress that allows us to stare out or potentially see any enemies coming through our gates for the final part of today's video i'm going to give you guys a few suggestions as to what you can fill these gaps with because of course most of this place is filled with redstone we've got redstone going on here we've got all this redstone here we've got a little bit of redstone going on here but we do have these two corners which have got the tiniest bit of space and i thought i'd give you guys a few options so you could do a storage system you could have armories you could have armor equipping stations you could have hidden redstone bunkers hidden storage you could have like a pvp defense station whatever you really fancy now put links to all of those down in the description just to give you guys some inspiration i thought that would be better than to give you like one set thing to do because some of you might not want that or perhaps you wanted something slightly different and of course if you don't want to add anything else in these corners that's absolutely fine because this place is already pretty amazing already so this is the redstone fortress we have got all of the redstone contraptions done and dusted we've got our castle gates that opens up just like this we've got our turrets that fire arrows out into the distance as you can see right there we've got our skeleton turrets which are currently activated and the skeletons are on top of those books right there i mean this place is amazing i personally absolutely love it and i hope you've enjoyed it too so let me know down in the comment section what you want to see me build next whether it be like a bunker or potentially a battleship just give me your thoughts down in the comments section i would love to hear what you guys come up with but unfortunately that is all i've got time for today i hope you enjoyed this video if you did be sure to hit that like button and if you really loved it then make sure to subscribe thanks for watching guys this has been mumbo and i'm out i'll see you later you
