Please explain how to make a rain barrel and conserve water

there's got to be a better way to do this if only someone would walk up here right now and and give me some advice Andy what are you doing I'm filling up water for my roof when it's raining because it sounds a good idea to use water for my roof in my garden and stuff well that's a good idea but I think I have a better way oh good well show me because I'm about to give this mic rest you know I have any trouble hi Scott you're gonna show me how to build a rain barrel yeah sure all right well let's get started okay first we have our 55 gallon plastic drum we have an atrium drain patron this is a patroness the first daughter of mr. and mrs. dream alright the first thing we'll do we'll go ahead and start by putting our silcock all right on the bottom I would call that a spigot all right spigot so we'll go ahead and start with this okay well we have we have a hole saw this say one inch yeah then we're going to drill this close to the bottom this is so you can either run a soaker hose or you can run a regular hose or you can put it up on some cinder blocks and you can use your water and can to get the water out of the drum let's go ahead and we'll cut the hole for the Silcock or the spigot with the 1 inch 1/8 hole saw holds off we'll go ahead and we're going to just eyeball it we're gonna come up from the bottom maybe three inches or so okay now I need the silcock a hollow this picket some pipe dope pipe dope the joke is so obvious I'm going to avoid it go ahead and some silicone sealer this is so we'll have a good seal you need to make sure that there's a seriously you need to make sure that you're in a ventilated area when I absolutely when I use this inside your workshop or anything or not end up like me outdoors is this alright I'm gonna put that inside alright alright and then we're gonna take some silicone sealer huffily done okay that's a claw that's a glob alright make sure this and turn it around to pointing down Scott knew to start it at the right place that when it was perfectly tight so it went down absolutely alright we'll take our towel and we'll get a tech affairs and now we have our drain so that we can drain the barrel hook you to a soaker hose okay so that's step one cool alright next we're gonna take our atrium drain place it wherever you want it doesn't have to be in the center off center that way because you know if I try to make it in the center it won't be so if I know it's off center then I don't have an OCD attack all right perfect now looks like I drilled again will like a pilot hole so we can get our saber so on there okay now then like our slaver saw and would take our atrium drain kind of snaps down in there and that's so when you have your downspout from your roof uh-huh it comes in here and it could direct it right into the middle cool just to give you an idea of how much rain you can accumulate in a rain barrel with a half-inch rain yes and if you have a thousand square feet of roof okay it's covered by a downspout all right you can forget 300 gallons of rain that's six of them that's amazing one of the benefits of having a rain barrel is you're able to divert the water away from your house right so you don't get in your basement you don't have foundation problems no so that's another benefit you're running in the hose and you're taking it further away from the house now this will be fine as a standalone if you just kept using it as it was use the water kept it drained but one other added feature of this that we're going to do we're gonna add a drain line let's add our drain line so again we're going to use our hole saw okay with a one and a half inch bit we're gonna get pretty close to the top and come down a few inches here on this side I'm putting it about ninety degrees to the right a little bit all right now another cool so we're gonna wrap this mm teflon plumbers tape around that three is snap that off right there family inside and some silica okay we're gonna insert this okay so that's our overflow and what we're gonna do with this looks like a over full of line and like I said we can attach this to another rain barrel or we can just let it run a little further away from the house so take our number 24 hose clamp slip that over driver and you can buy these components individually but I actually bought this drain line the clamp and the fittings for cheaper than I could have bought the pipe itself local home improvement stores the last thing we'll want to do we're gonna take this off the top to give you a little gravity we want to sit it up on some cinder blocks or elevate it somehow you could even put it up on the bench if you want it higher and you want to use something pretty sturdy because you can imagine when you get 58 gallons or so of water in there it's a lot of weight oh yeah it's a lot of weight that's right so we set it up on there right and now we have access we can fill out water and if we need to go higher again we put it up on the table and we have our lame bear you know what if that water becomes kind of you know in there for a while what could happen tell us the truth we can take it yeah mosquitoes will lay their eggs in there and those larvae will eventually have to know you have a little mosquito breeding canister here instead of your own little reservoir so so there's a number of things you can do first of all you can take this atrium drain you can cover that with a pair of nylon pantyhose another option is you can take your lid off and when you have it full yeah you could pour a layer of vegetable oil plants yeah and so you create a little oil slick in there that will keep the mosquitoes from either laying their eggs or if they did hatched from emerging light that's one way that's kind of messy but that's a possibility you can also put what are called mosquito dunks which are lower side that you can place in there okay and that's a natural microbial type thing that will kill the mosquito lon all right that's one option or the best option that I like you could put you a couple of goldfish in there what put you a couple of goldfish in there and you have a couple of benefits you got them the the mosquito larvae in there yeah also their waste creates the ammonius creates nitrogen get out yeah so just just make sure you feed him every once a while yeah how much all this cost the rain barrel was twenty dollars went in this a salvaged rain barrel yeah for the atrium drain the hose and the hose bib off of components and you probably have some of the other stuff sure you're probably looking at about another 20 bucks or so so for 40 dollars you got this if you go out and buy a commercial my rain barrel you're looking at about 75 bucks right all right Scott so we got the rain barrel we got we got everything and this was all $40 all your $40 you get and and you'd let me use the power tools and you're the first person to ever let me do this new power tool in my whole life so I appreciate that and that was so cool and for more information go to save water Newton calm go to now
