Please explain how to repair a split-rail fence | this old house

amanda the first thing we're going to do to get started is to remove the old post now that's snapped off right here in the ground you can see it right here yep kind of loose already which is good but in order to dig dig around it we need to move this daily now they're very easy to move i want you to take your shovel and cut right around it like that we'll pop it out of the ground and put it on a piece of burlap okay wrap that around and that's out of the way now grab that pointed shovel i want you to dig on the side of the post clear some dirt away from me when you get a scoop put it right on the burlap make cleanup easier okay couple more let me show you a trick what we're gonna do is use the shovel as a leather i'm gonna take and jam it in the side of the post i want you to push down on that very easy okay they're coming out see that yep beautiful out of the way now we need to open up that hole a little bit and to do that we're going to use this post hole digger hands together good open up right out on the burlap i'll see you in an hour or so okay amanda take a break great i have the pots to replace the broken sections of fence we have three new posts and six new rails where'd you get these i called the fence company up with the measurements of the old fence and they made up new pieces for me so it'll look the same they made me up these nice posts of northern white cedar why do you use cedar well cedar is naturally rot resistant it'll last a long time in the ground but they sent me seven foot post and this fence doesn't have seven foot posts i was lucky enough that this piece i took out of the ground broke right off at the rail so i'm going to line that up there use it as a template mark it cut it off with a chainsaw now in order to get these existing rails into this post i got to lean it back and then come into the rail so i'm going to line up the first one you pick up the second one for me and see if it'll fit in now okay now let's try the third one for me uh coming in good beautiful okay that's good now let's take and uh put a little dirt around it for me okay okay i am going to pack this in to make sure it stays plum and to make sure it doesn't settle and move on us good one post down and two to go now to set the next post and make sure they're in a straight line at the right height i'm gonna run a string line in order to do that i'm gonna put a nail in right here now if you would hear me that string i'm gonna attach it here what i want you to do is go down to the temporary stake that i put in earlier good operator on that's going to give us the exact height of our post in a nice straight line okay i'm going to find the length of this post a little differently i'm going to take the post and put it in the hole upside down and bring it over to the line that's going to tell me exactly what i have to cut off so if you would just mark that with a marker i'll cut it off with a chainsaw good okay in order to get this last post in it's a little tricky what we have to do is make room for the new rail and the old rail to go in so we do that by tipping the post way back until we can slide this in then we go for the other side and slide that in plum it up and we're good to go print that's it
