Please explain how to install custom car exhaust : high performance exhaust vs. standard exhaust

Hi, I'm Doug. I work with twenty great guys
in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods, and we're going to do some work for you today
at ExpertVillage. We're nearing completion of our customization and restoration of this
1967 camaro. It has a big block engine, a lot more power, and a different exhaust than
the one we're putting on the other camaro. The car that we're installing the exhaust
on, the restored 1967 convertible camaro RSSS, has a performance small block engine in it.
It's a 350 cubic inch modest horsepower car, probably 350 to 400 horse. This 1967 camaro,
also a convertible, has a much larger engine. This is a 396 engine built to probably 500
horsepower. It has substantially different exhaust needs than our more standard neighbor
here. One important difference is the size of the pipe we're using on this one is two
and a half inch, instead of two inch. Another important difference is the ex-pipe, you can
buy these or we make them. It allows the exhaust gases to expand more evenly between the two
pipes. It fills in the pulses between the cylinders firing and allows for a much more
efficient exhaust exit. And another big difference here near the rear of the car is these performance
mufflers, these are a FlowMaster brand, but there's a number of brands. It's a high flow
muffler, the downside is that they're expensive and they are a lot louder. The stock muffler
we're putting in the other camaro is a lot quieter, but more restrictive. The exhaust
system designed like this one, with the larger diameter pipe, the ex-pipe, the performance
mufflers, probably allows 15 to 20 percent more power produced by the engine to be realized
at the rear wheels, instead of being wasted through the exhaust system.
