Please explain how to make a suncatcher from a recycled glass plate tutorial

hi this is Tina was serendipity nee I'm going to show you how I make some catchers from slumped glass now I start with a I have a mold here that I got from a glass supply place and I have added three coats of what is called primo primer and I just got it in this container here but it comes dry as a powder and you mix it up and then you brush it on to your mold let it dry brush another layer let it dry do three layers so I've got three layers coated it's dry it's ready the Primo primer keeps it from sticking to the mold and the next thing I'm gonna do is add some recycled glass that I have salvaged from a broken glass desktop which I then cut into these pieces that will fit into the mold so the next step is to place the glass into the mold and for this I wear gloves these are cotton gloves just plain old garden work gloves and I do this because I don't want my fingerprints or the oil to get onto the glass because that can cause discoloration and problems with the glass this piece I also don't want to handle with my fingers like I said you don't want to clean it with Windex or anything like that because that causes a chemical reaction as well so just soap and water and a clean soft rag to get as much off the glass as you can so that it's nice and clean when you put it into the mold alright that looks good I will say there is a scratch on this glass it's used glass it's sort of adds to the character I'm going to be gluing other pieces on to this as well but you can see that I'm going to just place this right into the mold like that so it fits neatly on top and it stick because I've coated it and the next thing to do is to put it into the kiln and we'll have it at a slumping temperature I hammer I have a piece of wire that I cut it's copper wire it's actually recycled electricians wire so I'm not really sure what gauge this is it's thick and this is going to be the stem of one of the leaves on the plate so I shaped that with a little curl at the end and now I'm you don't have to hammer it but it makes gluing easier if you hammer it flat so I'm gonna do that that helps considerably okay so underneath my plate I have a pattern I drew of it's a pennant style leaf and you can see it's just done in marker and I'll lay that underneath I've got my wire down and I've picked out from recycled glass that I have tumbled glass that comes close to the shape but it's not exactly the shape if you want to shape it you can use a glass grinder so the next thing I do is I just use a six thousand glue and I glue down my glass and I'm going to use super glue on the leaf base and flattening that copper helps considerably it makes it easier to glue down you can also use e6000 glue instead of super glue but it can make it a little gooey you're looking and not as neat so I'm just going to go ahead and put superglue on this try not to get it on my hands there we have it so just to show you this is what it looks like it's not glued down yet but you can kind of see the basic shape and if you're not happy with it you can kind of mess around with it before you get to this stage and shape things a little bit but I think this works okay and my glass doesn't match exactly but it's mostly olive toned glass that I'm using so I think this one should be flipped okay so now I'm just going to glue on the pieces I'll just show you why and I'm not going to go through the whole process but let's see and my glass isn't exactly flat so I have to put it on the places I know we're going to hit the glass okay so everything's glued in place now I have to put a fastener on so I have it's a copper that's called a bail and you use it for jewelry but I thought it would work for this - I used to drill through my place you can do that as an option but to me this simplifies things so the first thing I do is I rough it up on the back with the file because it adheres better and I'm using a special kind of glue the glue is a glass glue it's called Treo lys I think and it's like superglue it smells like superglue but you have to use two components to make it work and you put one component on one thing that you're going to glue and the other component on the other to make it work and then when you put them together they will they're very strong so I am first going to measure the middle of my plate it measured about seven a little over seven inches wide so I have to adjust but so the middle of that if you take three and a half times a half that would get you seven so I'm gonna go over just a little bit over three and a half and Mark with a marker so I know where my bail is going to go and then I'm going to take the glue in the bottle and put glue on the back squeeze that out a little and then I'm going to take this comes with a really stiff applicator which it was a little softer then I'm going to put this glue on the back side where I want the bail to and I'm just gonna put that on there and you're supposed to wait about fifteen seconds before you put the two components together and I always tape it so it'll hold so I'm tearing off a piece of masking tape here and it's probably been about 15 seconds hoping this holds if it doesn't hold I may have to reglue it's very sturdy once it does so I'm just going to put that tape on and hold it in place make sure it's straight and wait for it to dry and then I'll show you the finished product one thing I will say is this is we're waiting for this to dry is the when the glue dries you might want to take like a razor blade or an exacto knife and cut around where there's extra glue showing just to get the extra glue off the leader the neater you can be at the beginning the better the less work there is for you in the end just to show you the finished piece this is what it looks like and I think it turned out nice this is Tina was serendipity knee
