welcome back for today's period of instruction we're going to be constructing a two-man fighting hole which consists of a whole roughly two and a half feet wide by six feet in length and approximately chest deep and we're going to accomplish that using a military tool all right the first thing you want to do and constructing the fighting hole select the location now right now it's starting to rain a little bit that's good to go because if it ain't raining we ain't training not back to this location it's flat and level and the best part is it's semi elevated all right how is that to my advantage well one it gives me miles of visibility all the way around and second because it's starting to rain the flash flood where to come through here my fighting hole is gonna stay high and dry for those of you that don't know I'm going to show you the unit of measure in the Marine Corps anny tool roughly runs between 16 and 1/2 and 17 inches depend on where you pull it from so roughly two of these would be our width and forward these would be our length once you're happy with your location and got your layout completed start digging one real quick tip here taking a body home work with that will pull in this I can brush always put my door the dirt time to that way to be scraped away and we'll hear hear with NASA once you're comfortable with the depth of your hole what you want to do is build a water sump down the center making sure that's perpendicular to the length of your fighting oil a water sump is simply a catch basin just in case of any water were to run down the walls of this fighting hole has a place to collect right here so a good rule of thumb is you want this perpendicular to the length of your fighting hole and you want to be approximately width of the blade of the etool and a minimum of six inches to one foot deep the fighting hole is almost complete let's talk about this dirt berm what we got here is a wall of dirt approximately one foot high and to three feet thick now if you notice what I've done is I cleared the dirt away here approximately a foot from the edge now I've done this for two reasons one prevents cave-ins and two you can actually walk around here if you needed to or put or place something so certain items as a stove or food or a weapon etc you can actually lay it down you a small shelf right here now back to the berm now reasons for putting the berm up well one it could block convictive breezes too if a flash flood were to come through here the water can be diverted around or would take longer for it to penetrate through now one important things you choose put a dirt berm buff in front of you or in this case all the way around you is camouflage and we'll get into that right now alright the last thing you want to do is camouflage your berm so anywhere you can see dirt need to camouflage it by adding foliage once you have camouflage your berm you can walk right by and not even know it welcome back that was pretty good to go training now I want to do something different today and actually construct a military fighting hole and show you what that consists of so now we know let's talk about two important factors one is hydration and the other is calories if you don't have an ample supply of water and food do not attempt a shelter like this now let's talk about the shelter itself this is a basic of the basic all right there's plenty of ways to do this this was one now this can be evolved into so much more for example where the camera is sitting right now I could put a fire right there and that will actually heat up the walls and radiate it back onto me and keep me warm I could put logs perpendicular to this hole all through here and that becomes a dugout shelter you can put debris on top of those logs and that becomes a modified debris Hut and it goes on and on so keep that in mind with that hope you learned something today I'll catch you all next time you
