I received a question someone wanted to know if they could remove their caller ties and basically you can remove them if you put a strap on the top but again you would need to check with a structural engineer or should I say I would leave that up to you whether you would choose to do that or not you have got to keep the collar ties in the upper third section of the roof and I'm gonna put a link in here to the video explaining that but you can actually move the caller ties if you're looking for more room you might have you might need some more storage space but remember it's a storage space is up to you most buildings are not designed to use their attics or their ceiling joist as storage space unless specified so and hopefully you might need to watch a few more videos about that so this video is just on what you can do with your collar ties and if you can if you need more room you can actually relocate them so let's say that you have a collar tight that's a little lower but still in the upper 1/3 of the area you can simply add another one shove it all the way to the top and then remove the one below so that's a simple solution another solution would be to use a strap here's the strap on top and you can see that there are no collar ties underneath the ridge board now this is a room edition that I did a long time ago and the architect or I should say the structural engineer chose to use straps and he wanted the straps located 42 inches I mean 48 inches on Center 4 foot on center with each rafter so and again you can see it's just a small room edition here so it only required one I put this one on here just to give it a little more stability but you probably wouldn't have needed this one with the wall underneath you would have had the gable end of the building here so you basically have two choices you can raise the collar tie keep it in the area the one-third again if you need to check out the link I'm going to put in the video for more information and some engineers allow you to use straps so if you want to remove the collar tie entirely you're going to be re-roofing the house or something like that then this might be a solution for you also you
