hello coder synthetic programming here and today we're going to be plating the inside of a glass bottle with silver so the first step in this process is adding 15 milliliters of dextrose to a previously cleaned glass bottle dextrose is an organic compound and actually serves as a reducing agent what this is going to do is help start up our reaction later but for now we're going to add 30 milliliters of silver nitrate to a 150 milliliter beaker what the silver nitrate is going to do is going to provide silver ions and these silver ions are going to be used in the production of a complex ion and so what we're going to do now is we're going to add ammonia to start that reaction as you can see well an ammonia is added the the solution turns a strange brown color as it fills with the ion and this ammonia nh3 if added in excess as you can see here when there's too much of the ammonia to keep making the ion and the silver ions have all been used up the solution is going to get clear again as the ions dissolve back into solution and you can see that happening here the solution gets lighter and lighter and lighter until eventually it is clear which is exactly what we're looking for for the next step so the next step in this process is to add some potassium hydroxide we're going to be adding 15 milliliters of potassium hydroxide that's Koh and we're going to add that to our mixture what that's going to do is it's going to make the mixture extremely basic and as you can see here it turns it a dark black color which is super cool I like the color changes the color changes are really nice and we're going to start mixing that up now we've got to add nh3 again until the solution is clear remember the nh3 once added is going to clear up the solution and as you can see here I'm adding a lot so a lot of ammonia here as you add more and more ammonia as you can see the solution gets clear again and that's what we're looking for there's a little bit there in the bottom that's dissolving but yep a lot of mixing here there is a bunch now after the solution is clear and everything looks nice and good we're going to be moving the solution over to the table that we had before remember that glass bottle we filled with dextrose now we're going to mix everything together so we add the solution we just created to the dextrose and as I put the cap back on you're going to see the solution start turning yellow and then darker and darker this is the reaction starting right here and there's a little film on the top that looks a little shiny those are silver ions coming out of solution and as we start to shake the bottle the solution coats the inside of the bottle with silver ions and as you can see now after a little bit of mixing the solution has plated the inside with silver okay so now we you just got to pour out everything that was in the bottle before as you pour that stuff out you can just put it down the drain and then after doing that pouring it out we can just rinse it with some water doesn't have to be distilled I use distilled in this one but you can see my friend in the back over there using regular tap water and I'm just swirling it around mixing it to get whatever other solution is still in there out and then there you have it thank you guys so much for watching click here to check out our last video of an explosion well there it goes and remember to rate comment and subscribe I'll see you guys in the next one peace
