Please explain how to get turtles to breed

I wonder if we can do a swimming with a hippo people swim with pigs in the Bahamas I wonder if Paul would want to swim with Lulu it doesn't get much cuter than that now bull sharks can survive in freshwater swimming with a bull shark and how can I get my diamondback terrapins to breed if I live in the United Kingdom and they're indoors the answer today's an scam Kenneth you got questions we've got answers just ask Anna so one of our patreon supporters Kareem from the UK asks how can he get his down in fact Terrapins to breed now he just got them and I'm assuming that they're gonna be living indoors now that's very important to note down here in Florida as you can see this female red-bellied cooter is just kind of investigating and seeing if we have any food for but down here in Florida I really don't do too much in the way of keeping animals indoors I prefer to leave them outdoors so that they can kind of do their own thing and follow their own circadian rhythms now a circadian rhythm is kind of like a built-in time clock that all living organisms have and we kind of know when the days are getting longer or the days are getting shorter and that's just one of the ways we are keyed into our environment some people even human beings suffer from seasonal mood disorder that means they get a little bit more depressed when the days grow shorter and more gloomy like you know poor Tom holding the camera he gets little depressed living in Connecticut during the winter months well I actually got bummed out living in Long Island that's why I hightailed it down to the south into Florida so animals have that same thing and they're even more in tune with their environment and the different barometric pressure photo periods even the temperature all affects animals whether or not they're going to go into brumation or whether or not they're going to be triggered to breed now human beings and only a few other animals don't really have a breeding season now turtles and tortoises do these animals have a specific time of the year that they are ready to breed and produce eggs and for my Turtles it's usually in the spring however I have some tortoises look at that she's getting a little nibble there look at her eating I just think that's the cutest thing she's eating some of the plants that are just growing up right here how some some of my tortoises actually breed in the winter so for you living indoors Kareem you're gonna have to get some kind of lighting on timers and you're gonna have to figure out and mimic the native time and photo periods and temperatures from the area those Terrapins are from now diamondback terrapins are found all the way from the coast of Maine down the eastern seaboard of the United States around the Florida peninsula up into the Gulf Coast and almost to Texas so they have an extremely large range which means some of them go into a deeper brumation than others so if you have a northern Diamondback Terrapin they're gonna be active from usually end of March until October they're gonna breed sometime around May and lay their eggs in June so that's important to kind of figure out what I would suggest doing sorry little one what I would suggest doing is finding out the average temperatures water temperatures lighting hours of light and then I would try and dial in my home aquaria to mimic that or my pond another thing you can do in the UK if you have the northern species of Donna back Terrapin is create an outdoor pond they are able to overwinter these are an animal that hibernate it's possible that you'll be able to hibernate those animals and you won't have to do any of the other little tweaking z' of the internal room or temperatures of the indoor aquarium you could just leave them outdoors year-round if you have the space and they'll do just fine alright so there you go Tom's got a question I've got a question this could be a year you gotta be patient right this could absolutely it could be a couple of years so you know it's an interesting thing about turtles and tortoises I've gotten groups of turtles and tortoises or tortoises for instance that bred regularly in the facility they were at well once you move them you can move them literally just across the yard and it completely upsets the balance and that stress has them kind of reset also you're gonna want to get them into like I said the circadian rhythm so if you're going to do it indoors it might take a sea - before they're acclimated to your manipulation of the photo period and temperatures so it's something that it's gonna vary from species to species and you're gonna have to be very very consistent you might want to look into some kind of automation timers dimmers things like that that are gonna mimic the photo periods and temperatures it's gonna it's hard to know if what you're doing is working then a lot of guys try it it is difficult to know but you know what that's the fun biology isn't an exact science so you got to tweak it a little bit as long as the animals are fed and healthy and are you know have good weight they should breed no worries so there you go guys there's a lot to think about when breeding turtles and tortoises that's why to be perfectly honest I moved down here to Florida where I don't have to do much thinking I just have to make sure they've got plenty of space and plenty to eat I'm gonna go get this gal a little treat because she's been such a good co-host today I'll see you guys later thanks so much don't forget to go to patreon.com/crashcourse the channel go to the camp kenan already channel to like and subscribe there on YouTube we're on Instagram at camp Kenan and don't forget to Like and subscribe this channel right here the original the mothership if you will camp Kenan thanks guys alright lady I'm gonna go get you some food we'll see you later there's actually steps these are steps going down into the pot
