Please explain how to rhodium plate jewelry with midas® plating system

hi this Thomas flutters from the Rio Grande tech team and today I'm going to demonstrate how to rhodium plate a go field ring with this comprehensive plating system you'll be able to add value to base metal prevent tarnish and refresh your plating jobs safety is our number one concern since we are dealing with caustic chemicals and electrical current you're going to need latex gloves an apron safety glasses and adequate ventilation now our first step is to mix the chemicals now we're going to mix our cleaning solutions our first solution is electric cleaner it is our alkaline based degreaser you want to follow recommended instructions when mixing the solution for today's demonstration we're going to mix one liter water for two tablespoons of electro cleaner and now I'm going to go ahead and pour in one liter of water and have my pre measured electro cleaner second cleaning solution is our acid dip neutralizer you want to follow recommended instructions on this also for today's demonstration we're going to mix two tablespoons of acid dip from one liter of distilled water and I have my acid dip cream measure now that we have our cleaning solutions mixed we're going to place them into our Midas 6 station plating unit station one is our electro cleaner it is stirred and heated we have our stainless steel anode which will pass a positive current through our solution we have our acid dip neutralizer we have our rhodium solution which is stirred and heated along with our platanus titanium anode which will pass the positive current through the solution in today's demonstration we are using Liguria Salter bright rhodium we have three distilled water rinses one distilled water rinse for our electrode cleaner one distilled water rinse for our acid dip and one distilled water rinse for our plating bath now that solutions are setup i fixtured our piece with stainless steel handling wire this will suspend our piece under solution now I'm going to set the rectifier i'm going to connect the positive lead the negative lead and the negative lead to our stainless steel handling wire our 5 amp rectifier will plate up to 72 square inches I'm going to set our rectifier for 7 volts that's a recommended voltage for this particular electric cleaner but others will be different we're going to electro clean for 30 seconds to 1 minute our first step in the plating process is to electro clean the piece we're going to electro clean for 30 seconds the positive lead is attached to our stainless still anode you will see when we go into this electro cleaner hydrogen bubbles form on the surface this degreases and removes any dirt oils or contaminants from the surface the minus 6 station plating unit has a magnetic stirrer and heating after 30 seconds we are going to distill water rinse for 30 seconds the Midas 6 station plating unit keeps all your beakers nice and organized you have separate stations for each rinse which prevents cross-contamination now we go into our acid difference we are going to acid dip neutralize for 30 seconds this neutralizes any electro cleaner on the surface and prepares the surface of our metal for plating after acid dipping we're going to rinse in distilled water for 30 seconds this removes the excess acid dip and now we're ready for our rhodium plating we will set our rectifier for two and a half volts that's a recommended voltage for this rhodium solution but others will be different and we will plate for 30 seconds you'll see hydrogen bubbles form on the surface of the piece that is indicating that we are getting a deposition of rhodium on the surface after 30 seconds we'll distill water rinse this is just rinsing off any excess plating solution we will go back into our acid dip neutralizer for 30 seconds this will neutralize any excess plating solution and now our final rinse and this rinses off any excess acid dip you'll turn off your rectifier and you'll Pat or air dry if you have further questions give us a call at one eight hundred five four five six five six six or visit us on the web at Rio Grande com
