Please explain how to cut a bird's mouth on a rafter

all right well we still have a little bit of cutting left to do on our rafters we want to cut in what they call a bird's mouth that's where the the rafter will sit on top of our back wall we didn't want to do that until we got the beam in place now that the beams in place we can go ahead and do it so what we did is we measure down from the top of the beam to where this will sit directly on top of the wall we make that mark so knowing that this is an 8 12 pitch I set it at a 12 I can set that on here and I make my plumb cut now this will signify is a parallel line running along the back wall just that in there like so and then I know this bird mouth wants to be the width of the top plate and this is with the top plate here so I can actually use that as a measurement so I see that I mark it all right and then I'll take my combo Square and Mark that and you can see that the rafter will sit perfectly on the back wall now we have our birds moment a circular saw works well but to the lumber this size you have to make cuts on both the top and the bottom and even then it takes a couple of finishing strokes with a handsaw to cut it clean through
