hi guys this is Ann from duct-tape and denim comm and we are gonna do a thrift store makeover today and it's probably gonna be one of the easiest thrift store maker overs that I have done or that probably you have done either and it's gonna be something that you see at the thrift store pretty much all the time I bet every single time you go to the thrift store you see one of these and I think they're coming back in style and it is wooden salad bowls so this is one I found a few weeks ago it was in really good shape all I did was polish this one but today I'm gonna show you one that really needs some help and how easy it is to clean it up and polish it up in you will not believe what a difference that's gonna make but that's a pretty nice but I haven't used this one to eat out this has been just like my centerpiece as a display so hey as you come in we all make a comment so I can see if the comments are gonna work just say hi tell me where you're from and if you know anybody else that likes to shop at thrift stores and would like to know how to repurpose not know this isn't really a repurpose this is just like a restoring something that you get it a thrift store and you're still using it for the original purpose this is a salad bowl that I've had for a while I've actually used this one I'm not gonna polish this one today hey Beverly how are you thank you for making a comment and I can see I'm gonna be able to see comments that's good this one has a little more chips so I think what I'm gonna do is sand this one this is gonna take a little more work than we're gonna do today but I wanted to show it to you and show you the shape this one you told bottom did I flip it or is that backwards that's gonna be backwards isn't sorry about that guys I forgot to flip my camera this is says Ozark walnut where I found this at a thrift store yeah years ago here is the one a sellable set not too long ago hey Pamela hey I'm gonna use some stuff that she sent me today yeah Pamela watches living our videos a lot and she sent me something that she thought I would like and I do I love it here's two balls that it came with and again this one is in really good shape you don't see many scratches it's just a little bit dried out so I don't know if you're gonna be able to tell can you tell the difference between those two bowls this is what it looked like when I found it any until there's not any scratches or scrapes but it's just kind of dull and it needs some polishing this one though I polished can you tell what a difference that makes so I'm gonna come back and do this one now because I got a match so I thought I was gonna sell it but I kind of liked it now does anybody else have that problem I I start working on something but I'm I bought to resell and then kind of blacken it myself so the product we're gonna work on today work with today oh no where did I put it hold on I'll be right back sorry I just took a picture of it for my blog it's called daddy vans furniture polish I think Pamela you said you used to sell this in your booth right I don't know I've never seen this locally I did see it on Amazon though so I put a link to it in my Amazon shop so if y'all want to find if they read more about it it is look for duct tape and denim comm slash Amazon so all you need for this is this furniture polish and it is beeswax it's all natural non-toxic safe stuff remember the wooden bowls that I painted last week and I painted them with metallic paint and someone asked me if it was food safe no it's not but those those bowls I'm gonna use for jewelry and for jewelry display so I wasn't too worried about it being a food-safe or not but these salad bowls I am going to use so I want whatever I put on them to be food safe because we'll be eating off of them so this wax is food safe all right now and I think I show this to y'all last week did I show this to y'all yeah I remember seeing that oh here I should show you this is what it looked like when I bought it I already started cuz I just couldn't wait there it is I love the shape of this just the way it goes back and forth like that it's heavy and it's solid you can see the label of course it's gonna be backwards it's teak it's solid teak genuine teak from Thailand I need to pull this price tag off I stuck it on there with tape oh well it'll come off and what else I can tell you it was $2.99 I got this for $2.99 so can you tell I already polished these two pieces these two little sessions isn't that amazing what a big difference that is I mean it's pretty like this but look at that okay so let me show you how I'm gonna do it all right I'm gonna tilt this down and just give me a minute because I am also gonna share this in my thrift store makeover Facebook group and if you all are not already a member that I would love for y'all to come over because sometimes you know Facebook does weird things sometimes they are picky about what they show from pages and sometimes they'll show more to groups so I did start a group just for thrift store makeovers and we have a different theme every month but it's you can share whatever you want to whatever you're making up making over or if you have a question about what to do or what kind of product to use or everything so I'm using one of these I got these on Etsy Oh several years ago so it's old and stained I call them cloth paper towels even though that doesn't make any sense at all doesn't it's a paper towel replacement and you can tell I've already got some on there but I'm just gonna dip some in here it doesn't take a whole lot so I'm just gonna work my way down I hope you can hope this is can y'all see that um it is taken a little more this bowl is taking more it than the other bowls did because this one was really dried out have you Oliver bought salad bowls it through stores and if you did do you use them that's the question that's one of those things you probably have to be a little more careful with a wooden bowl from a thrift store if you're gonna eat off of it but don't feel that that you can't you know unless it's just really nasty but most of them like this I think they'll be okay but first you just have to wash it well even before that sometimes you have to dust them off hopefully it don't have anything stuck on it okay that's just with rubbing it on can you tell that isn't that amazing and after you rub it on and you buff it off so and I'll probably shaking my camera I'm so sorry about that guys so if you find us at thrift stores dusting off and then you would wash them just with hot soapy water it is ok to wash wood with hot soapy water but a couple of things you do not want to soak it in hot soapy water you don't want to soak it in any kind of water just wash it you can dip it down in the sink wash it scrub it up real good and then don't even let it drip dry dry it off completely with the towel because I mean there would you don't want water sitting on the wood or that'll ruin it so and then once you do that you finish the surface let it dry out completely like I wash this several days ago in fact probably over a week ago now you want the wood to completely dry I mean I've heard people you know scrubbing it with salt to get it clean and then finishing it with mineral oil or you know a food-safe mineral oil or just different things but I have to say I love how this one is turning out Oh dad let me show you what amazing it's called daddy van furniture polish and it stood safe so it's okay to use on salad bowls I put it in my my Amazon shop so you can go look at it if you want to oops did you see what I almost did I almost reached over here to grab my coffee and dip my cloth in the copy guys I have actually dipped my paintbrush in my coffee before I shouldn't have it over here next to me while I'm working but you know sometimes you need some coffee while you're working you know my allergies lately boy my throat even right now it's dry and itchy I'm at this stop stop and take a drink of coffee I don't usually really like wax all that much but this one is pretty nice and I tell you I'm 11 habits turn it now so I did take a before picture I almost forgot so I have like a before picture where part of it just little first two little pieces are done sections and just use some kind of you know old t-shirts would be good for this this is my paper towel replacement I bought these off at Etsy - these would be really easy to make - if you just get cotton fabric and do the edges isn't it looking great Deb I told you this is probably the easiest makeover I've done and guys I'm in love with this right now I bought this too so we didn't that gorgeous look at that I have a feeling hi Lisa how are you I have a feeling that these wooden bowls are coming back and style now so if y'all go to thrift stores start buying them because all with this boho trend you know all that 70s stuff is coming back it may not even be your favorite but I have to say I kind of like I kind of like boho I think I might be able to get into boho even more than farmhouse oh Lisa are you agreeing with the part about the bowls being popular again there's just something sarap utak about polishing wood what do y'all think kind of brings me back to my childhood when my mom might my chore was to polish the furniture I don't think people polish the furniture anymore but you know my mom would give me the bottle of pledge and a rag and I would go around the house and spray pledge all over everything oh my goodness yeah I am loving this I might have to keep it for a while before I sell it I I got it cuz I thought it'd be a really good display for my jewelry you know put some put a piece in each little section there look close up here's the fact that I haven't done yet look at how pale that is and look at that all right which side do you like this A or B alright oh this is pretty yeah I bought this at a thrift store goodwill in fact a few weeks ago when me and my daughter were out shopping and it was what did I say $2.99 I think it was $2.99 it's teak it's really heavy yeah I'm getting ready and darling I'm looking for new display ideas I just did roses and rust last week or last weekend I still have a pile of stuff over there I hope you can't see too much of it because it's haven't recovered yet you know when you do a flea market it takes me days to recover and roses and rats is a big one but it's one of my favorites so all right I think I've got almost all of it I'm gonna do the bottom two I mean sometimes I don't do the bottoms because you're not gonna be able to see it how I wish well you know what I don't think good will stuff this on there it had a name on it so I think the previous owner tape put the tape on it and goodwill just wrote the price on the tag that on the tape that was already there but hey at least they did not write on the wood that is what I have a pet peeve about Goodwill riding on the writing the price on the item itself all right just to kind of review if you buy a wooden salad bowl from a thrift store you wanna make sure you clean it wash it with soap and water it's perfectly okay to wash it just do not let it soak and as soon as you wash it dry it off with a rag let it completely dry and then you're gonna finish it somehow today I used Daddy vans furniture polish and here is how it turned out just gonna buff it now I'm gonna use this and just kind of keep rubbing it and so there's no wax left on it and hopefully it's gonna be beautiful hey Denise how are you I really appreciate y'all watching and if you have friends that like to go through store shopping and like to repurpose things and like to restore things but this is not a repurposed project this is just a restoration project but this is making me want to go out and buy every wooden bowl that I can find and I pretty much see these all the time let me ask you do y'all see these bowls - I'm wondering if you see different things in different areas of the country I'm in California so we get I think that we get more mid-century and boho stuff yeah doesn't it and in case you missed it at the beginning I'll come back in just a sec and show you the other wooden bowls I have I feel bad about buffing it too hard because I feel like I'm shaking the camera - all right that's gonna be it for right now I'm gonna come back and buff it a little bit more but you can tell men that really it dried the dry wood just really soaked that up and it changed it so much so is it cold in Michigan Denise we're actually having a really nice day but it's supposed to rain so my lighting may be a little messed up okay so this is my favorite one that I found in the last week well yeah Darlene I I think this is probably the nicest one that I have ever found here's another one I found I think I think I found this last year this one was a dollar ninety-nine which still was a little high but look it's really thick it's thicker than most of them Oh Denise 45 degrees we would be freezing here people would be walking around in parkas if it was 45 degrees here it's probably 65 and it's a little humid because we're gonna get some rain kind of yucky okay this one I haven't used to eat out of I've just used it for a centerpiece and then here is these set in Afghan recently another step that I also bought to a cell and then here's the Leslie before/after picture can you see the difference there yeah Pamela Pamela and Debates y'all probably laughing at us right I'm in Northern California but it doesn't even it it might be below freezing for like a day in the winter look at how dry the wood west before and I've finished this yeah I like that one too so that's no problem I bought it to sell I like that one too and then there's this one oh these bowls these are also teak so I'm I mean they are they get really good this one is walnut and I've had it for a while but let me show you it's got some little Nick's and stuff in it so let me just go over I have a feeling I'm gonna have to sand this down let's say you can polish over it and it's it's not gonna do a whole lot so for this one I'm probably gonna have to sand it down and maybe restain it we'll see that's gonna take more work so I'm not doing that one today but in case you didn't see what I worked on last week the little bowls that I found for 49 cents and they were in really good shape so I didn't do anything to the wood part but I just um Denise how often do you polish depends on how often you use it every time every time you make a salad in it you know you need to wash it really good but like I said when you wash it you can dip it in the soapy water in the sink that's okay just don't let it soak and dry it off really good afterwards so it's that's a hard question to answer it depends on how often you use it and how good the polish is and just just go by how it looks you know once it starts getting dry I mean you could polish it every time if you wanted to so these little beauties were forty-nine cents this is just a metallic craft paint and I did this last week on a Facebook live if you want to see how I got the straight line and everything these are just going to be for display not food safe but aren't they cute I'm going to use them set amount put jewelry in them was the napkin ring and I painted those two also you know what I was thinking okay I I don't really do bright colors but if you do if your person who loves bright colors for the summer wouldn't it be fun to like take these off and do like bright fluorescent colors yeah Denise go to Goodwill right now everybody go save the wooden bowls so that's what I did with those I didn't polish the wood part of me is either if the wood was in pretty good shape so these I probably am gonna sell because if y'all saw my thrift store haul of napkin rings that I did a few weeks ago you know I've got eight sets of napkin rings and we don't even eat at the table anymore well we do sometimes but now I'm thinking maybe it's okay I was thinking about maybe you know letting that soak in a little bit longer and pull it and buffing it off and maybe even coming back with another coat because this really soaked up a lot it was dry off okay I'm gonna try to buff without buffing on the table because I don't want y'all to of the camera to shake so much yeah if you want to see read more about this it's in my Amazon shop duct tape and denim comm slash Amazon it's my first time to use it Thank You Pamela for sending it to me to try I love it I'm gonna go be find as many wooden bowls as I can now it's just something else on my list of stuff to shop for and if y'all find some or if y'all already have some I would love to see pictures of them you haven't come over to the thrift store makeover group I'll leave a link I'll come back later and leave a link to the group because it's just kind of easier in a Facebook group I think to share pictures and sometimes I wonder what Facebook is doing supposedly you see more stuff from groups I don't know it's kind of hard to tell now did any of y'all get notifications today that I was going live Facebook has really been doing a lot of changes lately guys and I guess it's good for I don't know if y'all heard about all the privacy issues they've had recently but I think they're going to overreact the opposite way and make it really hard for small businesses like me to get attention or for y'all to get notifications hmm yeah if you would like a notification try sending my page a message with the word live in it and I think that will sign you up and then if I remember to send a notification which sometimes I I don't I think the last one I the last live I did I was at the flea market and I didn't have my computer so I couldn't send you a notification all right I feel like it's bust and still it's pretty shiny right I'm liking it so I'm gonna go polish these other bowls and get them ready to go to pierce flea market and y'all will be seeing those in my Paris flea market shelf which next month I'm gonna have a different shelf so stay tuned and I will I'll try to do a live from there I know sometimes it's kind of hard I can't don't have very good connection over there sometime all right if y'all have any questions just leave them here if you watch later thanks for watching later and I really appreciate y'all watching and sharing this with your friends who like to do thrift store go through store shopping and I will talk to you guys hopefully on Thursday I'll see you then bye bye
