- Yo, what's going on everybody,
Brandon Champ Robinson here, and today, I'm gonna talk to y'all about staying busy and staying booked. Because how're we gonna be filmmakers if we don't have no money? (cash register ring)
We need cash. My couple tips are, I'm not
even gonna do like a five or whatever, I'm just gonna
ramble off a bunch of stuff. So, my first thing that I
like to stress to people is knowing how to do more than one thing. You can have this one thing
that you're amazing at, but you might not always
get booked to do that thing. You could be the best DP ever,
but they might not be booking you to do DP work, or you can't
find any DP work right now. What else can you do? DIT, Gaff, Edit, anything
else, learn how to do a bunch of other things. Me, out here in California, I
got a wife, two kids two dogs, I'm out here hustling. That's pretty much the name
of the game, you gotta hustle. My main thing that I do out here is, I never tell anybody "No". So, they say, "Hey, can you do this?" "Yup." And then, it's like the night before, I'll go on lynda.com,
youtube.com, wherever, and I'll just learn as
much as I can about that, depending on how much lead
time I got, hopefully it's not one night, but it's been that. I got hired to do some graphic design work for the social media campaign
for the TV show, Atlanta. I hadn't used Illustrator forever. What did I do? Took the day before, I watched
Lynda all day, doubletime. I refreshed my memory, made
sure that I was at least proficient enough to get
by, and boom, got the job, paid some bills, did what I
could do, made some connections. Basically, you don't wanna
put yourself in one box. You wanna have multiple boxes
that you can jump around to, so like, me, I just hop in
this box when I need to, jump out, hop in that box,
get back in my director box when I want to, jump
out, hop in the DP box. I edit all day, every day,
and that's how you do it. So, the main thing, stay
focused on your goal, but have your little tiny
side hustles that you can do to make money, and keep
yourself afloat until your big goal is the breadwinner. Hopefully that helps
somebody out out there. Keep talking to me, that was rough. I did that all off the cuff. Lotta times I do scripts, this
was from the heart, people. This is like, I bled on
the lens, right there. So, stay in tune, let
me know what you think about this video, let me
know if you have any tips on staying busy down in the comments below, and I'll catch y'all on the next one. All right, peace. (hip-hop music)
