Please explain how to overseed your lawn] with rye grass - [overseeding an existing lawn] to thicken up your grass

today it's the law and expert here here in Sydney Australia we're just into the first month of autumn so it's nearly the end of March and the weather's still sort of wrongish been a bit of moisture around but the weather will start to cool down pretty quickly so mum there's a couple of reasons why we're shooting this video the what we want to do is make sure that we we keep the colour in our lawn going into winter now there's two ways that we can do this we can we can instantly color the lawn with turf paint there's a new product out called color guard which I'd like to trial and I'll I'll show you that in the next week or so but in the first instance I want to oversee the the lawn with rye grass and this all um gives us a beautiful green color going all the way through winter until next spring and what the benefit of having rye grass in there is that it's um it'll withstand the the kids traffic you know playing for tea and soccer on the on the front lawn okay the reason why we we we're using rye grass is rye grass provides a lot of protection for the for the warm season grass what we've got behind us on our front lawn here at home is it's Kaikeyi grass or Kikuyu lawn and it's a warm season grass so going into winter it loses its color and also it loses its its its vigor so what happens then is when you get a bit of traffic on it through the winter ramp do a tends to wear out so what what's really good with the rye grass is this will provide some protection and it'll withstand the traffic as well as you can see we've made the lawn yesterday let's go and have a look at the the equipment that we need to herbicide the lawn with let's have a look at the equipment the horatii here's a bag of rye grass and also the spreader and the line markers okay this is the right grass like just to give you an idea of being um the size of the proceed the seeds themselves are about one millimeter wide and about five millimeters long as you can see I've got my spreader ready to to start spreading the perennial ryegrass seed so we'll get started I'll just I'll just show you the outer start and the finish just to give you an idea because the important thing is we'll we'll get back to this lawn in a couple of weeks time you know two to four weeks time to to show the results of the rye grass coming through okay let's get started okay as you can see I've just started spreading the rye grass seed or over seeding or over sowing the rye grass the the important thing was we need to UM we need to just spread it evenly so that's why we're using me the two line markers go and finish off the job okay so we've we've finished spreading the rye grass seed the important thing now is to is to water it in if it's watered well over you know a week it should start to germinate fairly quickly and and that it'll take a you know two or three weeks before we start to see it higher than the the kokia okay so we're looking forward to that result in the meantime the the Keiko you will start to lose some color as the weather as the the weather cools down so we what we need to do is to give it a bit of color will brighten it up with a bit of color guard so I'll show you that in the next video okay see you next time bye
