hey what's up it's Richard today I'm here in my house and I'm hanging out with my son Levi and I've got a little bit different video for you today I've got a lot of questions over the years about how we prep our trim and how we do our prep work on our installations and I thought what better person to explain that to you than the Idaho painter the Idaho painter is the most popular painter on YouTube and there's a reason because he's got a wealth of information his videos are very knowledgeable and I've been watching him for probably like five or six years back in 2010 before I started my own company I was watching his videos and I would venture to say that if you're a painter who wants to improve your skills or even if you're a painter who has the aspiration of starting your own company one day I believe he has the knowledge and the videos to teach you to actually start your own company he was definitely a motivation to me before I started dfw crumbling so in this video the Idaho Vader is going to teach us how to prep our trim so let's watch that right now this Chris you had a home painter in this video I'm going to teach you how to properly prep your trim to get it ready to paint now Richard is installed in a crown molding the trim for you you definitely want to prep it properly before you paint it that way it'll look awesome just like Richard did what he actually installed it for you in this process is actually a sponge caulking method inspect spackling method they're going to show you the process right now so now I have this door jamb my hair it's a bamboo door jamb installed and this is going to pertain to any type of baseboards or crown molding the coffee and spackling method and I typically use like a Crawford spackle an interior and exterior style this one right here is just a staff like that I like Crawford's it dries really hard well you're also going to want a sanding sponge I go sanding sponge up here that I've used like a medium sanding sponge that's used when you do your spackling when this stuff is nailed on just be dowels you're get a lot of spackle it let it dry and then sand it when it comes to the caulking I just get myself a caulking gun I like caulking guns with ratchets I'm going to use white caulking to this and then I have a sponge and this is going to be a wet sponge and dip it in a bucket bucket water and keep it really wet and this sponge is actually suck and keep my hands wet and I can actually get a really smooth bead of caulking on here so here we go so the specular method is very simple but it's just a matter of just getting enough spackle on there and filled that hole precedent and I like to just take and put it on there press it a couple times and then wipe it clean with the knife once that dries I'm going to just lightly go over it with my Sam sanding sponge so I go around spatter all this stuff it's always easy easiest since a door jamb just to remove the hinges and the doors always remove all that type of hardware and stuff and begin working with a clean slate I haven't removed it right now because I'm just shooting this video this is going to go long and just Sparkle all these things and here's another trick if you run into any holes when you're sparkling where you actually feel the nail there's a nail set that we actually use some spring tools right here I'll show you this nail set we have a nail that's sticking out you'll just take for instance this one right here just going to set this on there just pull the tool and just knock it you know actually just not that nail aunts always keep one of these things in my pocket to set in and nails at driven in all the way so just spackling right along can I give you another really cool tip here and after spackling it after seven if you if you're going to go ahead and paint it what happens is you actually see very very faintly where those spackle spots are and if you're really detail-oriented if you really want those things to go away we use a product called bondo glazing putty and it's the red glazing on red glazing buddy from bondo we'll just put that on there with our same spackle knife just like if it was spackle and then you sand that and then once you paint it you'll never ever see any of those nail heads ever put in the trim so when it comes to actually doing my sponge coffee method the steps that you're going to want to start off with you're going to get your door if you get if you're doing a door you don't want to remove the door remove the hardware but if you got crown molding or baseboards you're doing any type of trim you don't have to worry about removing anything but the process is you're always going to want to actually do your spackling first you're going to want to spackle it sand it if you're going to do the bondo trick you completely eliminate your nail heads then you'll bondo it and then sand that and then you'll begin the coffee process so what happens is you don't want to cut this whole door jamb and then and then if you try to do this faculty you may hit the caulking with your spackle a knife and rest that copying up or you could caulk it all let it dry for a day and then come back and spackle it then we typically spackle first do our sponge coffee and then get ready to paint and once this stuff is painted you can see this trim right here this is pre prime trim that inside the door jamb is actually very wood once we get it all prepped we're actually going to prime it and we always spray two coats of primer on and then we spray two coats of the top coat that we're actually putting on it now if you go through this whole process your trims going to look extremely nice it's going look like a professional vidiq it's going to have that automobile finish and it's going to have that quality look to it you can have Richard do this quality trim you're going to spray it and paint it do a quality job this look brand-new just like a brand new million dollar home so when it comes to talking your trim any type of trim you're going to want to get your coffee I got some white coffee right here it's just white latex coffee got a coffee gun you're going to cut your bead on your caulking gun get a nice little angle right here you don't want it really big you don't want it really flat just a nice small cut at an angle to make installing the caulking a lot easier I'm just going to lay out a bead on the door jamb and then I'm going to use my sponge to begin wiping it and then wipe the excess onto this sponge right here and so I'm just going to typically we'll take a hold or Jan right here I'm going to caulk most of the door jamb and then begin wiping it off but you're just going to take take it and put a nice little bead of caulking on there and then I just take and wet my finger and then I'll begin wiping excess out on the sponge and then I'll start just smoothing it out I want to just use my finger wipe off the excess on my sponge just use the pad of my finger to get a nice smooth bead on there okay this is about the outside of the door jamb work on the inside of the door jamb once I get the inside done this is the outside right here where it meets the wall and this is going to be just the same as the baseboards if you got baseboards installed I'm just going to take get my the caulking gun it's angled I want to lay that angle on there lay my feet out and then I'm just going to lightly push on it get a nice bead of caulking wipe the excess on my sponge and now I've got a nice smooth bead of caulking it's really important to have a wet sponge or wet rag to keep your fit your hands what I call nice and lubricated trying to give you another look at this door down I'll just get the coffee and lay out my caulking on here with my coffee gun and then I'll begin working my corner right here smoothing it out and I like to just get that thing nice that corner up here nice and fill out I'm just going to keep working it right here smoothing it out to get a nice smooth finish right there so this is kind of our actually doing this sponge coffee and does take practice but if you actually have you know keep your hands wet keep your sponge wet you have a lot of working time to continue to play with this if you don't get it just right just take and put some more caulking on there and then you can actually just redo it but you just want to keep it wet once it starts to dry and climb you late then you're not going to have any more working time you're not going to be able to go over it and once I get this in all coughing all spackle then we're going to get to the actual painting process now we had Richard in install your trim it's going to do a really high-quality job and you want a really high quality paint job and if you're going to attempt to brush and roll it it's not going to look nearly nearly as good as that you actually sprayed it we actually never ever on Russia roll our trim we always spray it and if you want to just go red yourself and hairless where if you've never used one you can go check out a lot of my videos how operated in Illustrator it's simple I'll teach you how you can actually just spray your trim so it looks like a professional video so I'm going to try to give you a look what it looks like right you're going to pause it right here now I'm just be doing this caulking and I got this back legs not done and I just want to show you how we go about copying it first so just going to run my betta coffee make sure you got that angle on your top you got a cut right lay the angle on there they're talking at angle just right lay that talking out everywhere right here just like that now I'm going to be getting sponge talking it with my sponge so the whole trick I'm actually talking it and getting in there is actually you'll got cut on your caulking tube itself get that cut in a nice 45-degree angle just make it a small hole in there and then it's going to lay out a nice speed now I'm just going to begin sponge talking it just working it with my finger just keeping a wet finger and just working it if your fingers wet you've got a whole lot of working time you can make a really nice bead now I like to get my corner dried hair like going to be nice and full I don't wipe out too much of the coffee I like them to be nice and full you can see I'm just keep wiping my hand keeping my finger new brocaded on my sponge just like that now you can just let that dry and begin my next step so here's a look at the spot where you process pretty simple I'm just going to go right along here and begin my spat way did you get any of these nail heads that are volcano and actually for tubing out you can just take your spot a knife and just scrape them off make sure they're nice and flat and then I'll just continue stacking all this stocking dries extremely fast I'm going to come back and sand it so the sanding process on our staff and holes is very simple and has take by three nail sanding sponge medium sanding sponge I'm just gonna lightly go over any of the spots I've spackle just to get a nice and flat here's a look at just inside my positive the salmon these baffling this spackling sands really easy once again have a nice flat sanding sponge and this a nice bone is actually soft so if you've got crown molding it will actually curve in any type of curved edges and stuff if there's any nails and then the curves so all these steps that I've shown you here these will actually apply to any type of coffee nerves factories any type of trim including crown molding just do this method just take your time it's a simple process easy to learn so there you have it hopefully you've enjoyed this video how the sponge off your trim and spackle it and get it ready to paint if
