Please explain how to build a chess board - builder's series ep. 1 p3

hey guys I do it Brady here with a random woodworker welcome to Builder series part 3 of how to build a chess board alright let's get started it's been 24 hours so it's time to take off the clamps the first thing you want to check for it's a raw your side's 90 degrees so if you put a square on it run it up it looks good looks good looks good all right now the next step we're going to have to get this flat the ideal method is to use a drum sander which I don't have they're expensive and of course I can't afford that but I'm gonna adapt the situation and show you how we can stand this to get it flat okay here's what I'm gonna use to hold this piece of wood down what I did was I got some fur at the lumberyard and I planed it down to a half inches so just less height say you want it lower okay I put it on three sides because if you both saying this risk wants to go that way so on and so forth I'll be felt saying like this so I don't have to worry about this end at all you might say they you know they do have clamps you can put on here and then clamp it but of course that cost money so I have dapped and this is how I'll make this work now I'm gonna take the wood what it is like so you notice even look play in it you know so you can move it around of it now when you put the belt on here I'm gonna go sanding sideways like so two tips when you're using this this takes practice one is keep it moving at all times the second thing is don't stop like this and then turn it off lift it up then turn it off you want to keep it constantly moving okay next step I'm gonna put a level across it I want to see where the lights coming through and it's coming through right in here and right in here so here's a high spot right here so I'm gonna pick on this a little bit less than this so I can get this flat I'm gonna be using an 80 grit sand on this okay I want to check again just slowly give you the best takes a lot of practice so it's gonna take me a while to get this flat okay it's still high to miss okay I got it flat and smooth so how I know is I look down here and see if there's any light as you go across it's high a little spots take your belt sander touch it up till you get it flat now it's flat and it's smooth if you're gonna finish this off you're gonna want to take this belt sander and kind of go this way with it I can turn it a little bit of an angle go like this now we'll scratch back into the grain then from there change this to 120 do the same thing than a two twenty three twenty until you get to the puppy really smooth okay now I'm gonna go ahead and do the other side now I'm doing the other side because I'll be gluing rails here so I want a pretty flat it's not bad but also remember this is an eighty sand on this so the glue will take real good tool okay so I'm finished here okay we got all four corners or ninety both sides are sanded and leveled if you notice okay I'm not gonna go any further with this because I am NOT gonna stain or lacquer a navy side so who do not see this wood whatsoever remember the belt sander it could be your best friend or your worst enemy practice on the thing when you're doing this okay alright we're gonna now go glue these blocks to the wood that base that I built if you notice I put a runner on the back here with wax paper that's when I take the blocks I can but them up all the way across okay let's get our first thing you want to do I'll do probably do the two or three blocks here you know just kind of guess run the would run the glue out like so get it even all right they take one of your blocks we're gluing it remember you want to glue both blue wood and the block all right so get it even across all cover every inch of it all right then now here's the great you see the red light there's the green I'm gonna come in about a quarter inch the timer just set it there all right do a black walnut their line is which way the green ones runs all right work your way inward to outward spreading real evenly okay now the grain runs that way so I said another right next to it okay now we're gonna go all the way down okay our last piece here I already put glue on this now what we're gonna do is take a straight edge I'm gonna push it up against these because that's what this is for push it up against there I want you to squeeze them together then you're just going to come and push them down firmly okay now if you push up on this you want to push it make sure it's flat are they all looking good yep okay okay what we want to do real fast it's just dampen your cloth and run it across here you don't want that extra glue taking that up the space when you work with the blocks you can work problem so I put a putty knife and I run it across get that get this get that glue out of there see it in there you don't want it in there because you want to put the other block up it's gonna block it I'm not putting up tight against the other one okay so you moving all the blue one up nice and flat okay then you go back check it again make sure you didn't move in the LM alright hey looks good there and this critical vibe pushing down again just to make sure you don't have to be a pilot just wear sit down if you're not sure you can always take this plenty night and just let it like that - so you even came off yeah a little bit did so you just got it has to come out of there so just take your time okay if you're wondering why I didn't clamp these down you don't need to these were this was clamped together because this is gonna take a lot of force and it can come apart you gotta clamp something that's big but when you're doing this these will Hart this will really set up good remember just push down firmly on all of them okay but we don't need to clamp up we're all set now like I said let it dry for 24 hours okay it's been 24 hours so what we're gonna do is take off this back piece move up you don't need this anymore okay see how it came out let's see very good see how the glue doesn't stick you got a beautiful surface here these holes won't matter cause you won't see them they'll be in the side of the wood here so you won't see that okay now turn around like so and first thing I'm gonna do is then you take your box you want to set them up like so you didn't put them tight together like so to squeeze them then you want to make sure both edges are flat with each other which they are push this together now what you want to check I have to use a magnifying glass because my vision ain't like it used to be I'm gonna check and make sure all these corners all four corners touch evenly go all the way down see how they're joined you want to check all of them they look real good it's time to start gluing these pieces together so what I'm gonna do is glue this strip then I'm gonna go ahead and go down I'm gonna keep I'm gonna finish it off so I'm gonna finish it all the way down make sure that these are flat you know check your points make sure all four points together okay so know what so start the first one out I showed you yesterday you're covered and you want to put I you just put a couple squares at a time here you can do three if you want so like that you don't want to go too far ahead of yourself and starts trying on you so I mean that little piece there get rid of it come underneath anything in the way here get it nice and even I got this name then we were just gonna like soup gonna set like so don't press it down yet you want to get them all down then you press it go to next row and go all the way down to your completed a couple of helpful hints one is I sent my blocks up here like so these are done I set them up I'm gonna put them together and run them up like so glad them all really good against each other and squeeze them together and then feel both sides you want this totally even okay that feels good the second thing you want to run your finger across the edges here hold these down and I can't really do it this way but holding down and then run your finger across these edges pushing this way a little bit make sure you push this way while you're doing it and feel for the edges if one's sticking out a little further you're gonna want to do this little tip okay I come on with my sander okay I got this set at exactly 90 degrees alright this huh this is uh just a little higher be careful I said push it flat hold it up flat till it's flat there turn around for a split second alright that's probably going to be enough so when you go back it's gonna be flat okay here's a piece I did I'm gonna put it in put everything up nice and tight okay squared off push together square off the edges then I feel again right on the money nothing's going they're all level of each other's alright from that point I take a pistol I'll just go ahead and mark here purpose of this is uh what I'm going to put the glue down I don't want to go past the mark more like a 32nd eighth of an inch or so so you don't have extra boom out there so that's why I do that okay there you're gonna just glue put them together like so when you light them all up line everything up line this up then press them down firmly don't press them down - you ready to make sure that everything's lined up and you go by press now for me it didn't do your next row alright this completes the last block put this on here - got glue on there and work your way inside out on all corners spreading real evenly then I just go across the grain set it down what I do is I put a little straight edge here see what kind of gap that looks good now put over here looks good okay now I'm gonna press them down from this point you let them sit for 24 hours this ends part three of the Builder series building a chess board I appreciate you watching uh check us
